I hate the modern world

I'm not really in a position to be offering advice to anyone, beyond suggesting you go back to Borobarmy's request for scoreline prediction and answer "11-nil to The Boro" while smiling. Then if Boro win you'll find yourself smiling again, if Boro lose you'll laugh at the scale of your fantasy, if Boro win by 11 you won't stop laughing. Ultimately I've learned over the course of my life the only advice I can give myself and anybody else is "smile more". Good luck with things.
And listen to good music of course?

I'd never be so presumptuous as to point a man of your calibre in the direction of The Sugababes or Babymetal, but they always bring a smile to my face. Mind, so do Black Sabbath, so it's all different.

(not my own work I hasten to add)

Imagine being born in 1900.
When you're 14 years old
World War I begins
and it ends when you have 18
with 22 million dead.
Shortly after, a world pandemic,
a flu called ′′ spanish ",
kills 50 million people.
You come out alive and unscathed,
you are 20 years old
Then at 29 years you survive the global economic crisis that started with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange, causing inflation, unemployment and famine.
At 33 the Nazis come to power.
You're 39 when World War II starts
and ends when you're 45 During the Holocaust (Shoáh) 6 million Jews die.
Over 60 million dead in total.
When you're 52 the Korean War starts.
When you're 64 the Vietnam War starts and ends when you're 75

A boy born in 1995 and today 25 years old thinks it's the end of the world when his Amazon package takes more than three days to arrive or when he doesn't get more than 15 '' likes '' for his published photo on Facebook or Instagram...
In 2020 many of us live in comfort, we have access to different sources of entertainment at home and we often have more than we need.
But people complain because about everything.
Yet they have electricity, phone, food, hot water and roof over their heads.
None of this existed in the past.
But humanity survived much more serious circumstances and never lost the joy of living.

Maybe it's time to be less selfish, stop complaining and crying.

First part has truth to it, the rest is unbelievably crass.

Wow thanks I'm cured, have you ever considered becoming a mental health nurse?

Will we ever let go of F***ing WW1 and 2 in this country.

Maybe aspiring to a standard of living that amounts to more than “not actively engaged in trench warfare or being blitzed” would be a good thing.

Not been bombed today? Oh then any other problem is entirely without merit - snowflake!

Gettttoutt

I never even mentioned it!

You're welcome ;)

Seriously my point was to provide a little more context to what others had posted eg. pointing back to what 1918 would have been like etc.
I didn't read your post as being a mental health issue I read it as just a good old "I'm pi$$ed off" moan that we all feel from time to time - especially in the current situation. (I probably wouldn't make a good mental health nurse)

If I've misinterpreted your post I apologies for what might appear flippant and crass. Hope you feel better soon.

No problem at all and thank you. There was a bit of pi$$ed-offness in there too! It all gets too much sometimes and for people who will turn round and say "why are you posting on a message board then?" I feel like I'm among friends here (for the most part anyway). I apologise in turn for misjudging you. 👍

Interestingly enough, whilst I share some of the thoughts on this thread, there have been many studies with available reports that the world is, in every measurable metric, getting better.

For example, extreme poverty is reducing almost year on year, believe it or not. In 1820 it is estimated that 95% of the world lived in extreme poverty, today that is about 15%.

Literacy has moved from 20% of the population to over 80% of the population since the 18 hundreds. Even in more recent years it is declining.

Global child mortality has reduced from around 40% in the 18 hundreds to just a few percent now and continues to decline.

Over half the planet live in a democracy today, in the 1950's it was less than 20%.

In every way measurable, the world is a better place. Levels of anxiety are higher than even 10 years ago, there is, absolutely a doom and gloom feel to where the world is heading. It is believed that this is largely to do with 2 factors.

Firstly damn 24 hour news. We hear more bad stuff, not because there is more bad stuff, but because it is reported in more sources, on our social media feeds on 24 hour news channels.

Secondly the news does not report what is going right, it reports what is going wrong in the world. You may, if lucky, see a closing news article on the news at 10 about a parrot getting rescued from a roof by a fireman, then telling the fireman to f-off.

The world is, undeniably a better place, we just don't see it that way.
