Humbling defeat

Exactly right. It’s was a game of football and we lost to the better team, but things can change very quickly for players, teams and managers.

Brighton have a good team at the moment but their fortunes could change very quickly.

We shouldn’t be disheartened, hopefully it will be used as a reality check for those possibly getting carried away by our championship form.

I loved both victories and this isn't diminishing the results. To win a game against a Premier League side, especially one near the top end of the table, you need a stroke of luck. You can't mastermind a victory when there's that much difference in quality.
There can always be elements of luck in any victory against ither higher or lower teams, we were very lucky against Chesterfield in the cup. Victories at Old Trafford are rare, i don't recall many neutrals saying we were very luck. I thought CW on the night got the line up and tactics right as well as getting the best out the team.

Spurs is fair enough, but we were exceedingly lucky to beat Man United.

They dominated us throughout, missed a penalty, missed an open net, and we scored with one of our only shots on target with a goal that would have been disallowed 9 times out of 10 in previous seasons, even without VAR, then won the shootout without the keeper making a save.

A great example of a lower league team getting lucky and winning a match they probably didn't deserve to.

We were the better team against Spurs though.
Going 120 minutes away at Old Trafford and then winning a penalty shootout at the end, is a bit more then just luck in my book.

You can't have spoke to many neutrals then. Even Wilder said we rode our luck.

You need to be lucky in games where there's a huge disparity in quality.

Hate to be the one to inject a bit of positivity here, but in spite of being on the end of a 2nd gear trouncing from a much better team than us, I was very encouraged to see that even against much better opposition, Hackney still looked very much the part.

Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Newcastle United
Wood missed an absolute sitter which would have tied it up as well. Mental last few minutes with Newcastle lumping it route one into the box and barely troubling Sheff Weds despite being able to tear them apart at will whenever they played it on the ground.

I think he'd figured out that it was a pointless pursuit after about 20 minutes.
It was good of him to stand on the touchline and keep telling Forss and Smith to not get within 20 yards of Mitoma, then to try keep playing it out down our right flank whilst Mitoma and Estupiñán closed us down and either dispossessed us or panicked us into slashing the ball away.

Surprised more hasn't been made about Mac Allister's first goal.

Pure quality.
Probably because it didn't look that great live. At least, not from where I was sitting. It looked at though we'd just let it bounce through the box and into the corner - similar to the goal Hull (I think) scored against us last year. I was slating Steffan at the time, probably owe him an apology now 😂.

I wonder how long Max Allister will stay at Brighton for. He's surely destined to move on to a Champions League club.

Not sure where the idea we didn't try is coming from.

We were outclassed, but we had a big chance to make it 3-2 almost immediately before they scored the 4th, and had a number of other chances on top of that.

They're just a much better side than us who played to their potential.
I was super annoyed and may be mis remembering but as I recall it both Crooks and Chuba had one-on-one chances pretty much with a keeper who was deemed to be not good enough for our level and tamely struck the ball straight at him.

I thought Crooks looked awful today, running around like a carthorse half pressing, half not. He barely won a header and I don't really recall him holding the ball up to any great effect. We also seemed to heavily favour bringing the ball out down out right, while Giles was available.

Apart from the header he flicked on to McGree who should have finished better or keeping the ball alive for our goal

Because Brighton never dropped their game, cup shocks happen when the better teams drop their game or a team gets incredibly lucky.

Us at our very very best in every department doesn't beat Brighton playing like they did today without a huge helping of luck.

They are simply better than us and no imaginary additional fight and effort changes that.
They got a lesson themselves at Charlton - they were probably a lot more relaxed and learned the lesson. We didn't play with nearly enough aggression to put them off their game. Even a top Premiership side can underperform against a lower league team if they get roughed up early. Instead we attempted to beat them at THEIR game and got properly stuffed because of it. Look at the speed they broke at compared to our 4 passes sideways and a hopeful pass forward with no name on it. We were comprehensively done in midfield, Crooks didn't work up front, Forss was a passenger and Giles wasn't any better than normal at defending. Howson was blowing with over 20 minutes left and couldn't reprise his heroics against Spurs. Yes, they were a LOT better than us. We move on - and hopefully learn our lesson.
