Huge day of rugby

Rugby related question, admittedly I'm not a huge fan, I've seen some games which really hooked me, but then some which just seemed like 2 fullbacks kicking to each other repeatedly. But my question is, why are so many elite players publicly educated, are there signs of this changing, and is the future of the game / (or English game if its unique to us) at risk? I realise cricket is in a si ilar position with perhaps the exception of Yorkshire and Lancashire. Genuinely interested to hear the thoughts of someone who may understand the game better than o do.

Well it used to be because State schools, comprehensives in particular didn’t play Rugby Union. They concentrated on football. Not sure now though. I went to a grammar school and we concentrated on Rugby Union not football

I didn’t watch it but reading the reports I’m not sure where England go from here. Their performances have mainly been poor for three years (since beating the All Blacks in the last World Cup).

Jones can talk about it being a new team all he wants, the facts are there for all to see. England are struggling in most aspects of the game and are well short of the standard needed to win the biggest games.

Just back from the England v Wallabies game, here in Perth. Quite a poor performance I thought, England didn’t make their early dominance count and Farrell was poor off the tee. The Wallabies played well, after a few seasons of mediocrity. Positives for me were the subs and the young players coming through. Scrum needs some work and discipline as usual 🙄

Stuart Barnes in the Times is scathing about Eddie Jones.

Good article

He’s right in that it always seems to be about the next game in rugby. Whereas once the 6 nations would the key focus now its all about getting it right for the World Cup. As if then some magic formula will be found to blow everyone else away.

It seems wales and esp Ireland and now France dont have the same rationale as for them Momentum and test form are the key.
