Howson

If Johnny plays in midfield tomorrow, I will be watching his movement with interest, to see how often he loses his man and gets in some great positions to invite the pass.

A couple of years ago away at Barnsley, some Boro drinkers were ascending the steps up to the back of the stand at half time. One was loudly moaning about Jonny Howson. A terrible midfielder. Another pointed out he is playing at right back and playing well there. The other replied that doesn't matter, he was bought as a midfielder...
Jonny Howson - whipping boy?

He isn't a whipping boy, but is protected by the manager despite playing no better than anybody else in the middle of the field. Howson lost his man at Reading but Payero was blamed for it. Payero lost his man and Payero was blamed for that too. QPR split our midfield wide open despite being down to ten men, nothing said about Howson that night. Or McNair. The thing that grates with some people is that he seems to be allowed to put in indifferent, below-par, sub-standard performances and keep his place or avoid public criticism from the manager. Others aren't. He's been poor in the main this season, IMO. The midfield is a weak point and has been for years. And he's a central part of that midfield so it seems obvious to look at what he actually brings to the team.

Jonny Howson - whipping boy?
The opening post was commenting on how good Howson was at losing his man in midfield and creating space for passes, in my reply I merely pointed out that it has happened quite a lot this season going the other way. Newyddion didn't like the word countless (how about several).
For this I am compared to a drunk at Barnsley who doesnt know the difference between a full back and a midfielder.
Very good admin.
Sorry forgot to wear my boro tinted spectacles, everything in the garden is rosey and we will probably go on and win the champions league under NW.
Oh and Newy if it wasn't for our keeper at Reading saving 3 one on ones when they had ran off Howson it would have been 4-0

Jonny Howson - whipping boy?
He’s just not that good. There was a Twitter thread this week regarding stats and it showed him to be one of the worst.

Couldn't agree more with the majority of this thread. He's had a good career bit we haven't seen the best of him. Not a defensive midfielder in a million years. He never shows for the ball when the CBs have it which just means we have a huge amount of aimless punts.

As much as I like Howson I think his best day's are behind him. Time to move on and give other player's opportunities.

And now its Howdon turn,Clayton,Saville and Morsay have all had their turn for criticism. Now they're all gone and Howdon is left like the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dam.Its all his fault.
I've criticised Howson since he came, never lived up to the heights I thought he would
Played well today. (y)
Can't argue with that. CB and RB are where he's performed best for us and I would only play him in those positions.
