Howson, time to move on?

He’s been a decent player for us and put in a magical performance against Spurs in the FA cup but when was the last time he scored or provided an assist. He’s been here a lot of years and in that time we have not really progressed. I think we need a bit more productivity from our central midfielders and at least some goal output or contribution.

Moved on this window or the summer?

His job isn't really about goals and assists anymore. He's a deep lying playmaker and has been doing it very well. The team are scoring plenty, so I'm not sure there's a problem there. Although we should always be looking to improve.

But at 34 he probably will be moved on in the summer, yes.

Given our shortage of players in that position he's very much needed this season.

Let’s not forget the excellent pass to Forss for the goal against Millwall which was not an official assist but a very good pass that created the goal. In the summer maybe time to move on who knows, but as above it’s about finding his replacement. Howson will do fine for us from now until season end.

I think on the whole he's been great for us. He's playing well again this season but not as well as last season where i thought he was exceptional personally.

Also think he's probably helping Hackney massively - on and off the pitch.

We certainly need to start looking for a really solid replacement, but he's more than good enough. I actually wouldn't be against giving him an extra year.

Before the season started I would have said 100% yes but since the introduction of Hackney, I think he's been playing well. Obviously not the long term answer however and is replaceable.

The ONLY reason to ditch Howson is the fear of decline because of his age, if he was 28 he would be the first name on the team sheet.

Measuring players purely in terms of Goals and Assists is pure nonsense, especially for midfielders, and i can only attribute that current phenomena to the whole fantasy football crap.

Yes we need a long term replacement for him, but to suggest he needs moving out, I don't agree with that, he could still do a job a la Sol Bamba and stay around the squad for the next few seasons, playing the odd game and being a positive influence in the dressing room and training pitch.

He should have been replaced a few years ago. It's a massive failure from the recruitment team that he is still our best midfielder. He's solid and reliable but not spectacular and is well past his best. I really like him and you know he can do a job but other midfields are often bigger, stronger and faster than ours. He should have been replaced and played his part from the bench where needed instead of relying on him as our 1st choice to play 90 mins every single game because we don't have anyone else.

Howson's been an excellent player for us for a number of years, but yes I agree it's time to start thinking of the future. He'll still contribute a lot this season, mind.

He's been great for us and is a big part of this Carrick team but time is against him, hence that's why the club is looking at the likes of Barlaser.

He'll be a huge miss when he's gone.

Last assists - Birmingham away and the last home game vs Millwall.
The idea that we haven't moved on being down to him is a bizarre one. If others had had his consistency then we may have.
We certainly need competition, but i don't imagine Carrick is looking to lose him from the club.

Key player for a team (Sunderland game aside) is in its best patch of form for ages. But yes, we need to find a replacement or at least serious competition for his place at some point because his legs will go eventually.

Until we sign replacements then who is going to play ahead of him?
Hackney is part of the future of our midfield, Howson shouldn't be, but currently is all we realistically have.
We are very lightweight in midfield - numbers and physically.

I'd keep him till he retites. 7/10 every game. Obviously get a long term replacement but he offers us alot and will continue to do so

When fans decry players lack of loyalty why would they write off our captain, our player of last season, our best trainer, an inspiration to all around him on the field and a role model to all those watching?
One defeat doesn't define or destroy a season.
Just enjoy having a team led by Jonny Howson. See how far it can take us til May.

The poor lad just needs a rest every now and then.

He has the odd game where he looks a bit off the pace, that then seems to spread throughout the team.

Of course all clubs are looking for the next Howson but we really could do with finding him.
Fully agree - when he has a bad game so does the rest of the team and we lose
