How much was your first Computer?

My first desktop was a Mesh computer. Bought in about 1994. Cant recall its price but reckon it was about £800.

I cant remember how much my own first machine was, that was a Spectrum - Horace goes Skiing and all that jazz, loved it

I do recall when my Dad brought his first 'laptop' home from work - he asked me to give him a hand getting it out of the car!

The mobile phone he had was not much better, you couldn't make notes if you were talking on it, I think you needed 2 hands to hold the bloody thing!

A 2nd hand ZX81 for £20. It was rubbish. I've spent a few grand on pre builds over the years. Built my own gaming pc last year for half the cost of a same spec model in PC World.

I can't remember how much or what it was called, but I do remember the big day out to PC World at Teesside Park with the family to go and get it. Even stopped off at Morrisons for a celebratory meal afterwards.

Hours spent on this beast of a game:

One of the first Amstrad's. Thing was huge and slow and bulky and took up most of the study but I loved it! Pretty sure it was over a grand!

Commodore 64, then an Amiga 500.
I was obvious to the cost as a young un (other than the fact that they were expensive!) as my beloved Mum and Dad bought them for me at Christmas/ Birthday.
Very fond memories of very happy days :)

Commodore 64 - was a present, but cost about £200 I recon.

A few years later, I bought an Amiga 600 for about £ 300. That was the 1st one I bought myself.

I got my first PC from Woolworths. Windows XP with some AMD processor . Cost about £500 if I remember rightly.

Had an Amstrad 1512 when they came out and graduated to a Dell 386/25E which Chevron were scrapping in about 1993 - once they were stored under the back stairs they were regarded as scrapped and you could help yourself. I managed to find enough RAM boards to get a massive 13MB of RAM and bought a Cyrix 486 double clockspeed CPU for it.

My first one was the Amstrad CPC6128 with the built in disk drive, but had the color screen (not green screen), I remember at the time thinking the graphics where out of this world. Spent hours playing Daley Thompson’s decathlon, Beach Head, Jet Set Willy and Gilligans Gold 🙂

Original iMac orange coloured about 1997/98 dial up modem and all that, about £1100 if I remember correctly, very good computer in its day and I’ve still got it in a cupboard upstairs.

I had a Spectrum 48k - think it was £129.99. Plus Kevin Toms' Football Manager. Paid for it with my share of my dad's estate, which totaled £450 between three of us.

First desktop was an Amstrad 1512 (?). No hard drive, but I think it had two floppy (5.25") drives. It did have a GUI which seemed a load of nonsense at the time (late eighties?) when you could load everything from DOS. £650 as far as I remember which now seems ridiculous, from a computer shop on Linthorpe Road. unnamed.png

The GUI was Windows version 1. I removed it to make more space.

It was a Gateway2000 and cost well over a grand I think in the mid-1990s.

I remember spending lots of time getting the new-fangled web browser (Netscape) to work.

For quite a few years, the price of a desktop was about the same iirc. Only the spec' changed.
Used to be worth building your own - not any longer, unless you're building something fancy. I just bought a new laptop, 1920x1080, 16GB for less than $500.

Video Genie

I've got one of those in the loft. Was still working last time I checked but I don't have a screen to plug it into any more. They don't have a HDMI port.

Dad bought it way back when and then we moved onto the BBC Micro range (he was a teacher and was into the technical side of stuff). Had BBC B, BBC Master, Acorn Archimedes and eventually an Acorn PC which was the first thing we had hooked up to the interwebs in the 90s (although we did have a Teletext adaptor on the BBC for years before that).

Built an "IBM Compatible" PC towards the end of the 90s. Cost less than a grand but not sure exactly how much.
