Two years back I had the privilege to escort a group of Y11 students to Poland and visited Auschwitz. During my visits to both camps, I stood in disbelief at how low the German nation had stooped during WW2 but took comfort in the fact that we would never see such atrocities again in mainland Europe. Don't get me wrong here, I am not comparing the suffering of the Holocaust to what is going on in Ukraine but every day I stand a gasp whilst reading the carnage of unarmed civilians trying to flee war-torn areas of Ukraine.
This week alone we have read about the multiple dead bodies strewn in the streets, mass graves being uncovered, civilians bound and shot, the continuous destruction of Mariupol, over 4 million people fleeing abroad and towns and cities turned into piles of rubble.
To add to this, today's headline is of multiple rocket strikes on a train station filled with people fleeing the East of the country with at least 50 people killed. The mayor of Kramatorsk said there were around 4,000 crammed into the station, most of them elderly, women and children. What threat were these people to the Russian invaders and how can they justify this as a legitimate target?
Russia is a very proud nation and I am sure the average man in the street would be mortified to hear of what is really going on. They will carry this stain with them for a very long time.
