How good are you at football?

Left footed right winger, I think I read the other day,may even have been on here that that is known as an inverted winger!

Hahaha 😂 used to do my head in. PE teachers loved calling me it. Asif it was some kind of new thing when a lot of players play on the opposite side, especially nowadays

Played a couple of seasons with my Dad in the Wearside League and Sunday mornings, he was a very good player who got called up for a couple of England C training squads but never got a game, he told me to be his legs and I certainly think it helped my game having someone offer that advice on the pitch when you’re 16, also gave me loads of coaching tips, I was training with the first team Marske squad from about 14 year old, the downside was that not being the best player in your household impacts on your confidence, and I deliberately avoided playing in the same position as my Dad to try and blur comparisons.

Best memory of playing with Dad was in a Shipowners Cup semi final 2-2 at full time and I came on in extra time and he set me for a tap in to score the winner, worse memory was a North Riding Sunday Cup quarter final at Kirkbymoorside, we were one up with 15 minutes to go and my Dad knocked it past the keeper, he’d always told me to follow everything up on a muddy pitch and make sure so as the ball trundled towards the empty net I slid the ball home about 6 inches from the line.....I was given offside, they equalised soon after and went on to win in extra time...not one of my better moments.

second half - was given my favoured position and told to run at them - at one point I had the simplest of one twos with Mendietta to go through on goal I did my part and asked for the return, he tried something fancy and completely cocked it up and slightly exasperated I was like “Mendy” before realising I was whinging at one of the best footballers in Europe in his day and I was lucky to be on the same pitch as him.

.
Haha I can imagine it! "Mendy what are you doing?!! Your utter sh*t!"

I love threads like this :)

To be honest, I really fancied myself as a player when I was 13, then I played right back for my school against probably the best ever Boro school team (73-78) the marvellous Hustler. A few posters over the years on here will know where I'm coming from with that. I think five of that side signed prof forms with various clubs. The best in that team didn't- I guess that's how it goes.....

Phil Linacre tore me a new backside that day. I was fast he was faster, I could tackle, he skipped over it. I tried to hack him down, he was yards away. It was a real lesson in ambition vs reality.

To be fair to myself, I played for my Uni first team, and got some money in a boot for guesting for a couple of sides north of Boro. I played till I was 40 (just) and played against one of the best Thai league sides when I lived there. Again, like against Hustler, they were on a different planet.

Since then I've coached 8-18's and absolutely loved it. My eldest plays semi pro, and he is better than I was- that's where it is.

Respect to the rest of you who raised the bar higher than I did. But I tell you what, I really enjoyed the ride :)

There are ever more similarities between us it seems atypical.
Cycling however should be outlawed - clogging up the roads etc etc. Cue a 62 year old C Store Exec getting on his bike from Lincolnshire.
I could take the bait but I actually do mostly off-road cycling these days, discovered some really good locations during lockdown that aren't far from my house at all. Plus, I've now learned where all the proper cycle paths are in Manchester (where you don't get Audi drivers 6 inches off your back wheel before you pass them at a traffic light).:)

Started footy quite late and didn't get any of the coaching other lads get when they're playing juniors which put me at a disadvantage.

Did okay though, played for Stockton Town as a kid, then at 16 got asked to play for Darlington Supporters side and got to travel around the country playing against blokes twice my age who just wanted to kick me, scored most games I played.

Was at my best around 19 years old. Played for the uni and had a five aside team with my mates that used to smash the league. Think we had the record at Hull goals for biggest win that still stood last time I visited, 33-0.

Knees had always been a bit dodgy, ended up barely being able to walk after I played. Cartilage in them is buggered. Quit playing at 20 and started drinking more and that was that.

Tried coming back but my hip is now completely shagged and haven't got to the root cause of why, NHS were rubbish.

Highlight is definitely scoring a brace in a charity match at the Riverside including putting it over the keepers head from outside the box! Just wish I'd nodded in my hatrick.

Jack of a few trades, master of none. Absolute ar$ehole on the pitch.

Bait wasn't for you, but for 1finny.
(I've never driven an Audi, but ridden some bikes:)

Played a few games in the Hellenic league but mostly Hellenic reserves and county leagues (goalkeeper).

This pre-season was mostly spent misjudging throughballs and taking out the opposing striker. I decided it was probably best to take a step back as it was frustrating being beaten by shots I would have got to comfortably a few years go. Acting as a back-up keeper in the lower levels of the Notts Senior league.

Love this thread, such a good read. Haha, FatCat that's so funny, firing a bollocking at Mendieta for his lack of vision before remembering he finished 8th in the Ballon D'Or above Beckham and Maldini and just below Thierry Henry

I was County 200m Champion when I was at school so I had it to burn. Unfortunately I hadn't been coached in the "if you are running down a blind alley, turn around and play it backwards" trick.

Hewie and Juninho10, that's brilliant.

You obviously both had exceptional ability and Hewie sounds like you were an all-round athlete, county champion at something like that is exceptional. Juninho10, amazing to have the opportunity to check your level against that youth team with Downing and everyone, an experience like that is priceless really. Admire you both.

Can I ask, were you focused on making it in footy or did you just do it for fun? Do you think you were good enough to "make it", and looking back anything you would do differently? Any regrets? Did you ever consider switching to a different sport or going the Olympic path or anything?

I played for south London boys schools in goal for a while in my primary school days but my concentration wasn't great and dropped a few clangers so didn't last long. Once I was in secondary school I started playing centre back and won plenty of trophies but that was more to do with the rest of the team. We had 3 in the team who turned pro, one was Philip Babb, we hardly lost a game in those 5 years.

I was focused on footy from an early age but I also captained my School and College Hockey team and competed in the triple jump when at school. I also played rugby but hated it (I actually scored our years only ever rugby try!!) I played on the same team as a few who went on to be professional footballers but I felt I just didn't have the impetus to go further. I was on a two week trial at Darlo when Brian Little was there but I jacked it in to go to Scarborough for the day. My mate stayed on and he was signed up and went on to play for Gillingham, Scunthorpe amongst others. I remember going to Clairville and have some sort of trial for running and the coach said to my dad that I could be an excellent 400m runner but when I found out I would have to train on Tuesdays and Thursdays (footy training nights) I decided to stick with football. Who knows, i could have been the next Roger Black :)

Yes my voice kind of tailed off towards the end as a voice in my head said what the hell are you doing, shut up!

Played Teesside Junior Alliance as a Decent centre half but unfortunately that’s all I really was good at , being a stopper . My centre of gravity was in my neck so wasn’t too canny on the ball and the likes of Pally was showing centre halves they needed more to their game .
Last team I played for was M&D club Stockton early 90s and especially did that in the end because of the free buffet and strippers in the club after the match on a Sunday .🤫

The teachers strike in the mid 80's had an impact on my sporting life, I was decent at running, town and district champ at 400m and 800m , but missed the County Championship with a bout of glandular fever, the following year I was out of age group and finished runner up in both events at town level, then when I was in the form of my life, I'd just broken 2 minutes for the 800m and was being touted to potentially to compete at a higher level and join the Harriers, I was going to stop playing cricket and give up athletics as my summer sport, the teachers went on strike so I missed two years of development and I became more involved in football due to the ease of access with my Dad, I'd train with the juniors one night and the first team on the following night.

I ran cross country for the county and played football, rugby, cricket and ran both athletics and cross country for my district but only played football for Cleveland at 6th form college level. I was a bit of an all rounder in a very small district, but I think all those sports helped in different ways. Football in my late teens kind of took over and probably had a negative impact on my first forays into adult relationships, with training 2 or 3 nights a week, then matches on the weekend, in hindsight I should have been more selective, I'm pretty much knackered now to do too much, I can't remember the last time somewhere didn't have a twinge on a morning or my knees and ankles didn't click.

Still it was great fun, and have some great memories, with a few disappointments along the way, I've played in every position on the pitch, although the less said about my emergency stints in goal the better, and won cups and leagues, along with the occasional personal trophy, made friends that I still keep in touch with and in the main avoided any real serious injuries until rupturing my achilles right at the end, I had 25 years of playing organised 11 a side, played at a few league grounds, scored at Ayresome Park, the consolation in a 4-1 defeat in the years of the very tight nets and my family thought I'd hit the post as the ball bounced back out.
