How good a season was 2005-06

I'm probably in a minority here, but I really feel we underachieved quite significantly during that period. We had the best squad we'd ever had, and with the exception of the top four we had, IMHO, the best squad in the league. We also had a good sized squad and so while there were the cup runs, we had the players to cover it - at the time we had Nemeth, Job, Maccarone etc who most people dismissed as not good enough; oh, to have that problem now!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and while we all remember the great moments in Europe, let's not forget that a lot of the time the football under McClaren was uninspired especially given the talent we had at our disposal.

Yep have to agree with all that

When you take in to account for the quality we had available to finish 14th when comparing v a few of the teams to finish above us, was probably quite poor

Most of our players would have most likely got in & started all the teams above us

Under Jack & certainly John Neals teams we had 15k in the ground,
Not just that season, Charlton would mention the crowds at AP, remember John Neals, excellent, exciting teams ofter plated infront of approx 15k fans at AP
Indeed but crowds were slowly decreasing from full houses in the Riverside era. Part of it will have been the novelty of a new ground wearing off too I expect.

I loved that season, I was 16 and Boro was the only thing that mattered then. I remember walking out of Villa Park absolutely gutted after losing to West Ham thinking we'd blown our chances of reaching a final as we were already losing the Steaua tie by then.
Another good memory was the emergence of Lee Cattermole, I remember him coming on in the cup midweek and clattering someone before his full debut at St James' a few days later, he looked the real deal.
