How good a season was 2005-06

As a team it was unlikely we were going to challenge the PL top 4 but Mclaren put together a squad that was capable of doing really well in the cups

It was a strange season really. The same season a fan threw his season ticket at McClaren was the same season we reached a European cup final, and FA cup semi-final.

We should have done much better in the league but looking back the cup runs probably affected our performances in the league.

In order of quality I would go Viduka, Jimmy then Yak but Yakubu was something else that season. I know he left on bad terms with the fans but I’m more than happy to remember him for the goals he bagged that year (y)

Just shows that you really shouldn’t take things for granted

Unreal to think we had all 3 of them here at the same time.

Against Steau we had all 3 of them on the pitch in the 2nd half. That's some firepower.

It actually makes me quite sad, I would love to get back to signing that quality of player again. Sooner we get back to the prem the better. I know people say they like the championship and I do too, but there is nothing better than being in the premier league and making a signing what makes you think wow! Then getting to watch them play for the boro. That’s what it’s all about for me

It's a shame we never won something with that squad. (after the Carling Cup Final - with the likes of JFH, Viduka, Yak, Rochemback etc)

I honestly think if we somehow managed to keep Zenden, then we would have beaten West Ham in the semi's and would've been higher up the league.

Although we did get to a final, I don't think we ever replaced him.

I liked Rochemback, but he wasn't anywhere near as good and threatening as Zenden was.

I want us back to being a competitive Premier League club.

I'd take seeing us go up against Man United in front or 32k than 18k against Luton any day.

Yes but to be mediocre we need to invest in the right players
Southgate eventually changed the players to his team & we struggled badly & relegated, Karanka had three successful seasons, the one stabilising the team, then got us up, sold the players he should have been loyal to, my opinion, bought inadequate replacements & went in every game not to lose, relegated

I think being back in the PL is one thing, but even once there, we wouldn't be a competitive force like we were then, the funds just aren't there. Wolves are carrying that baton now. That's why I don't pine for the PL now, though I did when we first came down. I just don't think those days are around the corner again, and our last PL season only enhanced that feeling.

I remember in about 2011, when it was clear our salad days were deserting us for good, I had a dream that me and thousands of Boro fans were drinking champagne directly from some fountains in Eindhoven. But whilst I watched, the melancholic track 'God' (by John Lennon) was playing. The lyrics:

"The dream is over
What can I say?
The dream is over
Yesterday"

were very prominent despite the celebration. The era 1994-2006 was very bittersweet, it felt like anything could happen, and some of it did, but there was heartbreak along the way, and some might say we didn't quite achieve as much as we thought we might when it all started. But I will always be grateful for the cup win and the UEFA runs.

Clearly, the dream was my subconscious coming to terms with the idea that we'd probably never see those sort of times again.

Since then, I've fully accepted that I'm a passionate supporter of a second tier club, and I've been comfortable with that for a long time now.

Also notable our biggest league attendance was <32,000 that season, when the stadium held 35,000. Our fans had become very apathetic about mid-table finishes. It happens if you don't kick on.

Under Jack & certainly John Neals teams we had 15k in the ground,

Not just that season, Charlton would mention the crowds at AP, remember John Neals, excellent, exciting teams ofter plated infront of approx 15k fans at AP
