How ambitious is Steve Gibson?

I’m sure the appointment of a new manager is top of Steve Gibson’s agenda both for Middlesbrough Football Club and his own reputation as the “best Chairman in the country” and “King of Teesside“. We have tried the dinosaurs and others that have yoyoed between success and failure elsewhere on the managerial merry-go-round and yet stubbornly remained in post with no regard for the success of our beloved Boro purely to pick up the huge severance packages negotiated into their contracts. Steve Gibson’s penchant for Manchester United was demonstrated to great effect with the appointment of novices Bryan Robson and Steve McClaren, and the untried and unknown Aitor Karanka originally turned out to be a winner. I believe the potential appointment of untried Michael Carrick demonstrates commitment, long term perspective, and ambition from Gibbo. Carrick was a level headed player in all the clubs he played for and would certainly be respected by both players and fans. He would come with a plan, fresh ideas, a contact book, and stability, and I think that the amount of time it is taking for both sides to put pen to paper is an indication of the long term commitment envisaged by all parties. The consequences of failure are unthinkable.

How do you measure success?

I just hope and pray that the recruitment of the new Manager works out.
I don't think Gibson's ambition can ever be questioned really.
Yes, I know there have been errors made by the Club over the years.....but such is life.

It's tough being 'just' a fan and not knowing what the strategic plan is.
We seem to invest in phases depending on where we are regarding FFP, how the team is doing and matters concerning Gibson himself.
Hard to see the rhyme or reason sometimes.

He is certainly not afraid of spending.
Sometimes this backfires and for a good few years we've had one of the highest salary bills in the League with little to show for it.

Re OP I think we are all about to find out as something bbc tees said after the match that I agree with carrick Is no fool so he won’t come unless he has the means snd the tools at hand for him to succeed.

That's what everyone said about Wilder though and there's plenty that say he wasn't backed?

Wilder most definitely was not backed.

He wanted 2 strikers.......and for whatever reason, probably financial, he was not given them.

2 managers do not fancy Hoppe & Forss......just by hobsons choice really, they are needed for the bench

Must admit, Chris Wilder appointment never struck me as ambitious at the time, despite his ‘success’ at boyhood club Sheffield United. Notice he hasn’t exactly been snapped up.

I think his ambition only runs to keeping in the Championship. The PL is the preserve of ultra rich owners.

12.4 Billion Dollars
This is what's killing the game and any real hope of success.
Aston Villa were going nowhere in the Championship just a few years ago (like us).
Then a couple of the richest men on the planet rock up and up they go.

The worst aspect is when teams like newly minted Villa get relegated.
There is no risk/peril these guys can keep spending as long as it takes.

As well as owning MFC and being a fan, Steve Gibson is a shrewd consummate businessman who owns significant holdings where MFC is directly linked to his own business interests. Indeed, I don’t think he’d deny that his successes both at the Club and in business have been in no part unconnected to the celebrity status and good reputation he enjoys on Teesside and beyond. I believe he will recognise the right moment to hand over the reins to new owners when the time is right in the best interests of the fans, the Club, and of course, himself.

You’ve got to speculate to accumulate. Perhaps our current position reflects Gibbo’s speculation and ambition in recent years?

His income? You mean the company of which he is a joint owner?

This fallacy that Gibson is, and has been, writing cheques from his personal bank account needs to end.
Has Steve Gibson lost out on income because of money pumped into the club? Yes

If Steve Gibson didn’t own and didn’t have to fund the football club covering shortfalls would he be as wealthier man for it? Yes

So does Steve Gibson put his own personal wealth into the football club? Yes

Winning and entertainment… in that order.

That's interesting, as during our most successful period, there were people throwing their season tickets at the manager , calling for his head, making personal remarks about his appearance etc because of a perceived lack of entertainment.

Almost as if the large toxic element of our fan base is never happy..
