Hong Kong Story

Most of Hong Kong is not on an island it is part of the mainland and the harbour that separates Hong Kong Island from Kowloon and Hong Kong Territories is verr narrow, there are many tunnels under it and a ferry ride only takes a few minutes.
It is far more connected to China than we are, it is part of China.

Yeah I knew it wasn’t all an island. And yeah I was aware that it was closer to China than the UK Rob 😬

When I was little I watched a programme on tv with my parents and my gran. It showed row after row of the graves of young people who died in WW2. For what seemed like an age the cameras scanned the headstones and no one appeared to be over 21 . Most were teenagers some had lied about their age and they put 16 on the headstone instead of 15.
I went to ask a question but as I turned I could see them all sobbing. Afterwards they talked about family who had died fighting or at home. It cheered them up a little to remember them and pass on their stories to a younger generation.
I decided then as a kid that I would always remember their families when they had gone. Both my parents passed away and as I had promised myself I always remember on days like Armistice day. VE day. and VJ day .
VE day is a celebration of the end of the fighting not of the fighting.
Its up to individuals to do what they want to do. But they don't have the right to tell me its been long enough and I should stop , they should just carry on and let me get on with it..

That’s absolutely 100% fair game, you and anyone else can celebrate if you want, but this is about the fact that the government have declared it a national celebration and that it could arguably risk breaking social distancing protocols en masse, sacrificing the lives of people who are actually alive now.

Can't see that happening. They will be vilified in the press if they allow people to gather without some distancing from each other .

Well I guess we can all only talk about our own experiences. My niece sent me a video of her friends at a birthday party this weekend with an entire street and family/friends in someone’s house. Literally as though the virus issue wasn’t even a thing. (My niece was disgusted with them and wasn’t there herself).

This just feels like another excuse for people to throw caution to the wind. That said, I actually wasn’t aware the decision to move the BH to Friday has been made before covid19, I thought it was a more recent decision.

I don't think there will be street parties. It was moved in 2019 before cv19 had even been invented. They did the same on the 50th anniversary. They've had to cancel all the plans and have replaced them with things like volunteers giving veterans a call. I think it is especially poignant now, given that we've experienced a month and a half of living in fear of those close to us dying and have been without things we have taken for granted. In 1945 they'd lived with it for 5 years.

The former Soviet Republics don't mess about with any of this mealy-mouthed Victory in Europe stuff. They call it what they're commemorating; Victory over Germany!

South Korea - population just over 51 million so quite comparable to UK - only they were infected far quicker and were hit far harder - ie we could watch, learn and react from what was happening there.. we had weeks in hand.
They have had around 12, 000 cases and just over 200 deaths.

For whatever reason, Western Europe and the US just thought we were looking at another Far Eastern virus that wouldn’t hurt us that much. By the time it had taken hold of Italy it was too late for us, and even then we held off doing anything too restrictive for a while.

My street have organised a 'safe distance' street party. My concern is that after a few drinks, and with the falling death toll/news of us being over the peak/Johnson about to outline his 'exit plan', people will be very tempted just to relax their approach in the knowledge that there are unlikely to be any consequences to their specific actions. If all street parties turn out like that though, across the country, it will literally cost some people their lives.

In the Far East they have only come out of their lockdowns with a stringent plan in place. Everywhere people go they are heat tested, they wash their hands, and answer questions. I hope this happens in this country?
