Very Interesting, my thoughts exactly. !
I think many on here have pointed out the gaping hole in the middle of the park and lack of passing options forward.
So SouthStand do you think this article is damning of Warnock ??

Personally i would give Payero the free role as No10 & have Howson & Crooks as the guy says....
Tav & Hernandez either side of Sporar in a 4-3-3, it's not rocket science is it

I don't particularly disagree with anything he says (although I'm not sure Payero is a 10 based on what I've read about him). I think a lot of what this guy is commenting on are deliberate tactics from NW though.

We know we intentionally match up man for man, so probably a lot of if it is a consequence of that. NW also wants us to get it forward quickly and not play it through the midfield. So of course our midfield isn't going to be showing for the ball in the middle of the pitch, what would be the point? The likes of Tav (the example he used) are staying wide on instruction I'm sure.

The crux of the matter is what many have been saying for weeks. We have a lot of players not suited to Warnock's tactics. Sporar being a prime example. A really good coach finds ways to play to their players strengths. I think anyone would struggle to make a case that Warnock is doing that. I personally don't think he's capable with the group he has. Which is why I'd change it.

Re: Payero, this what I've read. I'd go 3 in midfield anyway given the lack of a traditional holding midfielder. Why not play him in the same role he shone at playing for Banfield. Right side of a middle three.

Thanks for finding that link. I remember the article but couldn't find it. The key passage is
Payero is a right-footed central midfielder who usually plays on the right side of a midfield trio. Not a positional defensive midfielder and not a creative number ten, Payero needs to play alongside a more defensive midfielder and also needs more creative players in front of him. He covers a lot of ground and can also appear wide in the final third, almost as a winger
You can see that someone in Boro recruitment imagined a midfield 3 with Payero on the right and Lea Siliki on the left while Sporar plays a central striking role. Centre midfielder would be Howson or McNair while wide forwards would be permed from Tav, Hernandez, Watmore (and Jones).
Right now we have 2/3 of a Warnock team and 2/3 of a non-Warnock team which is really no good for anyone.

.............Middlesbrough don’t exert enough control across the middle of the pitch, and as a result, are far too easy to play against.............

...........This lack of movement is a huge problem as it allows any mildly organised side to virtually nullify Middlesbrough as an attacking threat..................

Yep, I think swapping Tav for Crooks to play through balls for Sporar would make us loads better. Tav is utterly wasted playing right 'wing' or more like an additional fullback at times.

'Football is a little like chess'. Hmm.

If these recommendations were taken up, after a couple of weeks there would be a chorus of 'every side that plays us knows they only have to stop Payero'...

Formations aren't tactics, and performances are more important than tactics.

"Let’s look at the Reading game, and once again the lack of any kind of central presence is blatantly obvious" - the Reading game where Payero played AM for the first 62 minuites?

Really interesting. I would have Tav as no 10 straight away and slowly bring Payero into the role.
Payero is an 8 as is Tavernier imo, Payero needs a good 6 next to him I'm guessing that's the role SIliki was brought in for.. tricky to bed in two newbies from abroad into arguable the most important area of the pitch. Howson can do a job in midfield a very good job.. McNair did well against Sheffield United but are they out and out number 6s like Clayton and Morsy?

I think we're seeing a mirror of last seasons post January slump, where last time round it was a case of injured unfit players getting up to speed around injuries/suspensions this season we are seeing the same but with younger players not yet used to the league. We've trimmed this squad right to the bone and we've built back up with very little room for error. i.e. injuries to Dijksteel and Bola

Hopefully we can scrape along until the January window and bring in the necessary reinforcements

Is this the second time this article has been posted?
Surely Sporar missed chances of exactly the type described in each of the last two games - one in each half v Hull City, second half v Sheff Utd. They were all arguably easier than his tremendous finish v Forest which I am sure he will repeat again soon. But in each case he was given the ball to feet and had one on one chances or was bang in front of the goal.
Payero was really static in midfield at Reading. I recall one instance watching Tav pushing forward down the right and looking towards Payero who was standing static with his marker. Thus Tav had to turn and pass square instead.

OF COURSE! that answer is simply to play Payero in the number 10/right side of midfield role and play him with Siliki on the left hand side or behind.

If he just plays alongside Howson or McNair or with Crookes all our problems will be.. or with Tavernier in a double 8.. all our problems will be solved. Good job Kieran Scott is on the case to tear everything up and start from scratch midway through the season etc etc etc

I didn't think Payero was brought in as our star player this season. I think he was brought in to replace Tavernier going out next season. Siliki, Sporar & Hernandez are temporary stop gaps. The current spine of the team is built on the back of three players that are out of contract in the summer with Howson, Peltier & Bamba

Next summer we could easily see another 11 players having to be brought in just to maintain where we are now!

-----------Stojanovic----------
Peltier--Bamba--Bryan--Brown
-Tavernier--Howson--Siliki--
-Hernandez--Sporar--Ameobi--

The problem for me isn't in midfield, the problem is in defence we're two players down (Kean Bryan and Ciaron Brown) and it's having a knock on effect further up the pitch.

What I take from the article and the comments above is we have the wrong manager for our players - given we have just recruited the players and cant easily change them we should instead look at changing the manager
