Access to UK Lidar here:
Lidar

You have the option of DSM (surface view including trees, buildings, etc...) or DTM (terrain view, trees, etc. filtered out). Also different resolutions 2m, 1m, 50cm & 25cm (very limited coverage). NLS OS maps now has Lidar at 1m and 2m resolutions as a possible overlay on old mapping.

Thanks for that chickenrunner. I will have a look at the site I helped survey in the summer on John Cross Rigg. Not a hillfort as such but very interesting.

The above is usually said to be Norman ringwork - like a doughnut. Visible from the Leven viaduct on the A19, called Castlelevington. It was said to be a defensive bank thrown up on top of an easily defended natural hillock, commanding views up and down the valley. Whether you live inside the banks or just use it as a place of refuge when under attack is another matter I suppose.

The military did race around in tanks and the tracks are still evident but just as on Fylingdales Moors surveyed by Blaise Vyner (following the fire) in early 2000s the tanks and shell holes have probably not damaged too much.
