Hideki Matsuyama

wathced it and he played really well, while making some errors he handled those with excellent recoveries. Sank some critical putts of a good length to save par. It was stranges as for a lot of the time the other players around him non were making real moves.
Yes he is now made for life back in Japan, and there was a stat page shown during the final round showing his past history and he has won 5 regular tour events, which is a major benefit as he knew how to get over the line. Pockets $2m for the masters but it is life changing for him regards invites to the other majors etc.

The first player from his golfing obsessed country to win a major title. He will be a sporting god in Japan for the rest of his days.

Also delighted for him. Amazingly still only 29!
Happy for him.
I backed Spieth after a tip from a mate. He owes me five pounds now 😂

Nice touch that they have named the town from where he hails - Matsuyama!! 😉
Real nice touch from his caddy as he replaced the pin at the 18th and bowed as a gesture of respect and honour to the course. Most caddies trouser it and then leg it. I'm sure the club will have presented it to Hideki afterwards .

Pleased to see him get this one over the line at long last. Should bring a lot of interest to the golf at the Olympics.

Yes but It didn't need it. I tried to get tickets for the golf in Tokyo last year. They were quickly sold out.

There was also Hisako Higuchi at the 1977 LPGA Championship. It is amazing what you can remember from watching telly.
If you didnt google that fact I bow to your specialist Womens Golf knowledge - remembering 1970s ladies major winners. I used to be able to reel off all the men major winners from about 1967 to about 1990. I wouldnt have a clue recalling all the major winners from 1990 onwards unless they were noteworthy i.e European.

Ladies golf is getting dominated by asian counties Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and China. In fact the non asian winners tend to stand out more. I can recall Hannah Green being a bit of a shock winner of the LPGA a couple of years ago. Do I get a bow Cardiff? 😀

Well done, even though I backed Rose who struggled. I remember Tommy Nakajima in the old days. He will be happy! Also remember Mr Lu, one of the first from Asia, with the Pork Pie Hat, who finished one shot behind Lee Trevino in the Open after wiping out a female spectator on the last hole. Wonder if she got a signed glove!

He was ranked 25th in the world before he played in The Masters, so would basically qualified for all the majors anyway - (unless I'm misunderstanding your final point, in which case, apologies).

Even if he drops down he will get 5 year exemptions to other majors and to the Masters until aged 65.

It was on telly somewhere. I could not remember the more recent one. However that stuck in my brain for some reason.

On the downside I occasionally struggle to remember what day it is. Or whether I have put the sweetener in my wife's coffee.

I think The Masters is actually a lifetime exemption rather than 65. Even better!! :)

My point about the other Majors is that he's likely to qualify anyway, so it's not so life changing in that sense... but I'm not really disagreeing with you or Truck. (y)

Not so his family name is the same as the town. They have not renamed the town. Unless you were having a little joke of course.

He was playing the last round so well, letting the course oppose the field who were having to make things happen, then, having brilliantly negotiated through the potential disaster of amen corner, he went a bit loopy and it all got interesting for a bit until Schauffele went in the water at 16 and relieved the pressure.

Great win.

The great Isao Aoki hasn't yet been mentioned on this thread, so here it is.
