Hayden Coulson

Some of our fans are a bit harsh in my opinion. He's a talented young kid who has barely had a kick this season. It didn't help that when he did play earlier in the season he gave the penalty away and took a bit of stick off Warnock. It was probably deserved as it was a very needless challenge but it may have dented his confidence slightly. He has bags of pace and is a real threat going forward and not afraid to take his man on, that should be admired. We shouldn't slaughter him when he makes mistakes because at least he is trying to create for the team. Marvin Johnson is having a decent enough season but how often have we seen him spanner a cross into row Z? It happens quite often. He is definitely a left winger and not a left back though there's no doubt about that. I feel he showed enough quality last season to prove he can have a good future in the game. Didn't he get young player of the year? Lets not write the kid off just yet !

He would need a run of games to get back to anything close to the level he reached in certain games last season but with Bola and Johnson playing much better than him that is not going to happen at the moment unless one or both of them get an injury. If we have a left back in the U23s to cover Bola, I would send Coulson out on loan to give him a chance to develop his game further.

Think him and Spence found their 'roles' as wing-backs when we played with three center halves.
Have come to appreciate Spence more out of the two as he covers so much ground.
But could either of the be considered natural 'wingers' or 'full backs' I don't think so.

Bit odd really. Where to go next?
Fully agree which is really disappointing because in a back five they were both exciting to watch and looked primed ready to quickly develop yet we don’t play that formation much if at all.

When he first came on the scene, I had high hopes for him, but he just hasn’t pushed on. He is defensively weak, he is better pushing forward, but his decision making seems rushed. He is another that needs more game time on loan for me at a lower championship or top league 1 team and see if he learns. However, our squad is too light to do it.
Hasn't helped that he has not had much game time and when he has he's played in various positions.

If Spence hadn't had a good game today the naysayers would probably have been saying the same about him.
Coulson is a good member of the squad. At least he tried to get involved. What did Roberts bring to the party. He was rubbish.

Got high hopes for him personally just not at left back more left wing . Maybe he just hasn’t clicked with warnock . Package him up in a loan to Barnsley and wel take Woodrow 👍😎

Better as a wing back and could possibly develop into an attacking midfielder but hasn't progressed this season.

This guy is a talent. He was at fault for the first goal and there is no escape from that. He is a better attacker than a defender that's very clear. We are struggling to find a position to play him in that works for him and for us. Sadly this has been going on for years.

I first remember him as a decent left back who got forward well then they tried him vey much up front. I was astonished that he had to be told to go to a keeper / defender who was strolling about in the penalty area. To me if they're playing about in the penalty area you get after them - every so often they will make a mistake.

This is the problem I fancy, he has played in so many positions without nailing one down he has been left with uncertaintanty as to what to do and it shows him badly particularly if he doesn't get much game time

Agree give him a break, let him go out on loan.

Agree give him a break,we are either saying players are the next Messiah or they are crap.Let him go out on loan nurture him and re-assess.

He played at a lower championship team all last season

He’s been around for like 13 months. We’ve seen some very good performances and some mediocre ones. Rather than condemn the rest of his career why don’t we just wait and see?
He does a lot of good things then makes a ridiculously poor pass or poor positioning to defend the breaking winger. He ought to be someone Warnock can improve as he seems to have a positive temperament.

I think that's the point I was trying to make with the OP. We've seen so many dramatic improvements from players under Warnock. I really thought Hayden might have blossomed more by now. I still think he's a huge talent

True but if Bola and Johnson are blossoming more he isn’t going to get as much chance to blossom. In a squad of 23 there’s always going to be one or two players who don’t improve and Coulson is one of them. But who knows, injury to one of those and he may take his chance, no idea why anyone write to right him off as “not good enough for us” yet, especially when we’ve seen what can happen to players under Warnock. It’s a long season and we’re barely half way through.

I did sometimes wonder if I was watching the same player as everyone else last year, who were making him out to be much better than he really was. He's still young and inexperienced, and is OK. Well worthy of a place in the squad, and might turn out to be a good player, but a long way to go.
