Have you ever lived or considered living abroad?

Given our government is pretty horrific and the weather is generally a bit shoddy. I’ve been wondering if living abroad somewhere might be a better option.

Anyone done this?

Thinking about it in a way that I probably won’t..

I liked the USA (West Coast) but they are going even madder than us! The scandi models of governance seem appealing, but the there’s the cold and the dark, New Zealand doesn’t seem too much of a stretch.. Barcelona looks nice and has a cool vibe, Germany looks a bit like a better Britain atm

I guess I just need to find a California/Barcelona like place with a Canadian/Nordic sort of vibe..

5 years or so in Norway, the same in the States, a couple in Holland and Ireland. A few months in Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Singapore and Saudi.

Ireland is handy, English speaking and no need for a visa/work permit, good standard of living.

21 years in New York. So glad to be home. On the other hand, the few years in Holland were great and I rather wish we'd stayed there and taken citizenship.

Am currently doing it. Been in Spain 7 years now. The government - or Brexit - back then wasn't reason to leave but is a reason not to come back. I really don't like the way things are going there.

16 years in Dubai. Thought it would be good to come back (ageing parents etc) but it has been really tough getting back into the groove. There is something v oppressive ( I can’t put my finger on what it is) living here. I would move away again but it gets tougher as you get older and now it’s harder to move tp places that we used to take for granted, in europe

Yep 15 years around the world..

Korea 2 years / Barcelona 5 years / South America / France / Netherlands / OZ / Austria etc ...

Most mind opening experience you can have! Incredibly fulfilling , difficult, wonderful, tough, character building and makes the world seem so small.. No different to 'living' and working anywhere but people seem to think if you go abroad it's 'Travelling' and self indulgent which frustrates me now that i'm back.

Once you start it's incredibly addictive and the more you push yourself to learn the lingo.. enjoy the culture it get's into you and then makes settling/stopping very very difficult.

That's my experience anyway! Everyone is different tho..

I'd say it's the best thing you can ever do.. and if it doesn't work out then 'home' isn't going anywhere!

Cheers x

Lived in Korea when I was younger long before having a family.
Think about moving somewhere else all the time, mainly because of the way the NHS is going. If too much of it or all of it becomes privatised it would cost me a fortune, wages are not increasing enough for it and would probably bankrupt me.

Lived in Singapore in the past. Back to (post pandemic) a few months in London, a few months in Brasil. May shift the emphasis to Brasil. Great place, great culture, great people ..... as vezes um pouco perigoso ....

Where did you live in Korea Lowmoor??? And when? What an amazing place! :)

Over 8 years in Saudi. Great people I worked with but some of the locals have some funny ideas on life. It's like a third world country with money. But a reasonable standard of living and a lot cheaper than here for the essentials.

Came back home over to NZ in January 2021 and we stayed ( I intended to return but until the Tory Government get voted out I will stay put and live and work here.
