Have to laugh at the stick Lineker and Gary Neville get on social media/Twitter

As soon as they post anything criticizing the government they get the usual "stick to football" line from the offended right wingers. As if they have no right to an opinion on politics, but your average Sun/Daily Mail reader is entitled to knock educated sports personalities. I wonder why this is?, same with film/tv people, as soon as they voice a vaguely left wing opinion they're labled 'left wing luvies'. So media folk in prominent positions can't alert people to how badly the country is being run and call the Tories out on it?

And then there's the 'pièce de résistance'- the Champagne Socialist line. So, someone who's done well in life, made a few quid can't be concerened about social issues, helping others and is met with "why don't you give all your money away and house 10 Afghan refugees".

Funny what the right wing media has done to some people in this country. At least the right wingers still have Jim Davidson for a balanced opinion. Oh, and Laura Kuenssberg..

GARY NEVILLE FOR PM, LINEKER FOR CHANCELLOR. WE NEED MORE GARYS IN GOVERNMENT!

I follow Gary lineker just to read the frothy replies he garners…

those people really should just stick to sniffing their fingers after scratching their ar5es…

It is a really sorry state of affairs isn't it? People get REALLY upset when their right wing views are challenged.

They have as much right as any of us, of course they do. However using their celebrity status as footballers to promote their political views, as if being footballers mean they know more than the rest of us, is insulting.

If they want to stick their political head above the parapet go ahead, but don't expect to get away without it being shot at.

I think you've missed the point somewhat.
It's not an issue of people confronting them on their views, it's people who genuinely hold the opinion they shouldn't be expressing these views at all and then giving them stick for it.

They’re people with views, primarily, their profile through what they’ve achieved in their former and ongoing careers means they’re using their position to raise awareness of things that matter to them, healthy debate is fine, what they receive is often unhealthy abuse and ad hominem attacks wanting to silence them, this summer and the actions of Rashford and statements of Mings and the England team’s refusal to meet Johnson shows that football and footballers are more aware of politics and the widening sphere of influence to promote ideals that their profile brings.

I don’t think they promote any kind of specialism or wider knowledge, just men, like us, with an opinion and a want to share it.

Like the rest of us they're entitled to an opinion.
Unlike the rest of us they're cosseted multi millionaire footballers who've never had to do a proper days work in their lives.
I don't even look.

Lineker used to work on his Dad’s fruit and veg store as a young man and through the off season when he was at Leicester, Gary Neville has developed a business portfolio including hospitality, a £200m property development in Manchester, e-commerce and marketing, not sure if those would constitute a ‘proper’ days work as I’ve no idea what ‘proper’ defines in this instance but it would indicate a level of awareness, at least, of the world outside the ‘cosseted’ jobs of football and media.

And they should therefore get abuse? I'm not sure what the relevance is?

I suspect following Neville’s criticisms of the Government a week or so ago which hit a major chord with many people, certainly me anyway as far away as NZ, the right wing mouth frothing underbelly have it really in for him.

Personally I don’t see why anybody should be “barred” from airing their views just because there happens to be lots of people who listen to them. The advantages of being high profile. They have a vote, a right to exercise a say, and to demonstrate just like we have. It you don’t like what he says you should just ignore him not abuse him.
