To see his opinion polls plummet and people showing outrage and still they back him.

have the tory hierarchy badly underestimated the damage this is doing to them and misjudged the mood on the nation.

BoroMike and I have a differring opinion on this, in terms of why the public are angry. Yes I think they have misjudged the publics response to this, and the amount of political capital it is costing them. Imagine being schaaps if Cummings eventually gets sacked after he was trotted out to toe the party line on Sunday morning.

I believe Cummings will be gone by the end of next week, I really do. I think Johnson will hang on to the end of the year, but not much longer than that.

Possibly but there must have been strong messages from their own MPs over the weekend. They may believe they can ride this with good messages on suppression and things beginning to open up. If the schools opening goes all wrong, they may need a sacking to get people back on side, but it's more likely to be a minister than Cummings.

The problem for them is, they've planted their flag in the sand and decided to add several layers of lies and excuses to try and defend it. They haven't licked a finger and tested the political air, they've gone all in on protecting Cummings.
I think that has made things much worse as, certainly in my view, any political tolerance due to them trying to manage an unprecedented pandemic has been eroded by their absolute arrogance and their treating the public as fools.
They seem to be treating Cummings as some sort of Svengali and they seem hell bent on keeping his talismanic influence no matter what.

There was a picture in the papers yesterday of Bournemouth beach with thousands of people on it. The public will not listen to them again and follow their guidelines. They are losing control and don't even realise it.
