Has wilder said why he dropped Giles and Jones?

I mean the idea to make the team more solid is a good one. If players have confidence in their back line it's easier to try something attacking as you aren't scared that any loss of possession will result in a goal. But I think Giles is decent and should not have been sacrificed to keep the formation. Jones - perhaps he needs a kick up the **** but I certainly wouldn't single him out as no one is playing well.

Confidence is so important to Wilders team. Look at sheff utd. The crowd disappears and they sink like a stone. A confident player plays one touch football, a confident player chooses a forward pass rather than a sideways one, a confident player takes his man on instead of a sideways pass.

Think there’s a lot in this. A “Wilderball” team taking the easy option can quickly sink like a stone

I just cannot understand why we are where we are. First half was awful yesterday. Then (once again) we dominated but didn't score... Baffling...

He could have said anything other than what he actually did say, and it would have sounded more plausible than giving them a rest after a two week international break.

He didn't say a rest - it was tactical to make us 'nice and strong and solid'. Really poor decision for me. I joked to my daughter at HT maybe the tactic was to be so bad 1st half we'd lull them into a false sense of security and then unleash the proper team 2nd half. But it seems that was the tactic.

"We thought that the right way to go about it was come here and be nice and strong and solid and get a foothold in the game. Especially with our current away record, we needed to do something knowing that after 60 minutes, if we needed to take the game away from the opposition, we had those two to come on.

"The thing is, they are wingers. Let’s not forget about that. They’re really, unbelievably forward-thinking players and our away record is not that good. So I thought if we could get ahead in the game and then they’re coming on, or if we had to chase it which we were, we had two players there that can help us out.
You can understand where he’s coming from with this explanation, especially with 5 subs. We have been shockingly open and **** poor away, clean sheets are the first step to getting better.

Doesn’t stop it being a mental decision, and the wrong one, and I doubt he’ll do it again. Their replacements were hardly a pair of Maldinis - Smith was so poor - and now he’s probably put the noses of two of our only talented players out of joint, who will feel scapegoated and expendable. Jones is still developing and can understand why you’d take him out of the firing line but he’s so important to us; dropping Giles is insane.

And… how depressing is it that he feels the only way to get a result away at one of the worst teams in the league is to drop both of our creative players and try and keep it tight for 60 mins and see what happens.

Jesus, compare that to the attitude of the team that started against - and beat - Man United and Spurs last year. We went at them. All reeks of a manager overthinking it and having no confidence in his team, and therefore making really bad decisions.

It’s an excuse that reads that he is at a loss at what to do when we play away. Worrying to hear, very worrying to witness.
