Liam Roberts' contract won't be up until the 30th of June either.
That's nothing to do with it.
Clubs regularly announce free transfers before their contracts are officially up.
We did it with Lumley last season too.
Lenihan will just be on holiday, because he finished his season later than most players as he was away with Ireland.
You don't know it's nothing to do with it.
You can only sign a pre contract to move abroad within 6 months of your contract ending, or domestically within 1 month I think, but that contract would still only largely become active on the day after the original contract ended. Player contracts seem to be fixed to 1st July - 30th of June, for those who move at end of deals.
I don't think a pre-contract is "watertight" as in he could still sign another deal with Blackburn, or elsewhere, I suppose it's more like a letter of intent. There's probably other things/ clauses which may apply if players move through bosman/ pre contract etc, but come 1st July he's a free agent, and Blackburn said he would leave as a free agent and he'd already made his decision and informed the club he's going to (which I assume is us).
I suppose it depends on how well the clubs "get on" too, each club is different, they might not want us to announce it, until his contract is up.
Clubs and players can agree to terminate the contract early (if all parties agree), so they can start a new contract, some do, some don't. That contract might run from like 15 Jun 22 to 30 Jun 23 or whatever.
He has been away mind, maybe Blackburn didn't want to release early in case he got injured, so they could claim insurance, or they could maybe hold onto him if we pulled the plug on the deal, or if they got a cash injection form somewhere so could offer more cash. Maybe we didn't want the contract running whilst he was still away etc.
People can still sign contracts abroad, they don't need to be in England to do it, can probably even do it by docusign now. Most of the time you see players "signing" in front of the press, the deal has already been signed, it's largely for show etc.
It's rumoured Mbappe signed a pre contract with Real Madrid, and then pulled the plug on it when PSG offered more, anything can happen.
A pre-contract, an actual contract or nothing may have been signed, it may just be an agreement over the phone that he'll come up and sort it out when he's back, but things kick into gear fast come 1st July.
