Will Isaiah reach his potential at boro?

He will leave in the summer. He has good moments in him, but lacks any consistency, and has done nothing playing right wing, only in that wing back role. If we look at his technique, with the ball, yes he can run quickly with it, but he has a poor touch, he can get into good positions with his pace, but his crossing technique is erratic, he can shoot and finish. Without the ball, he switches off behind him, and he goes to ground far too often, I think 4 goals under Wilder were caused by him going to ground this year.

For me he is a long way off the level we need, he is a player with good physical attributes (pace, quick feet, acceleration) but little in the way of technical or tactical ability. He'll end up as a dangerous league one level player like Lewis Wing, and that is a decent standard of football for him to make a career from. He needs to be playing week in week out to reach that level, and he won't get it with us
I think you nail it here boromart, he had his purple spell last season and he looked dangerous but once the dust has settled he really hasn’t pushed on. I agree a championship loan if we go up but if we don’t I’d look to move him on and replace him.

I've seen this happen with two young Boro players who went on to play for England, Cooper and Ripley. Both unfortunately reached their peaks elsewhere.
big difference is that by the age Isiah is now, Coops had been a first choice player for 4 seasons and played almost 200 games for us & Rippers had 5 seasons as a regular had played 245 games and scored 25 goals.

Isiah at the same age is miles behind those two at that age.

Another big difference is how much senior football they'd been allowed to play. Coops and Ripley were thrown in our of necessity, had they signed for another local team they'd have been waiting years for their chance.

He may be gone in the summer, he may not, much will depend on our league status and squad needs as loan players return to their clubs.

Said it on this thread, on 14th Jan, Carrick doesn’t trust him, and when he was out of the team he needed to show something during training to force himself back in he obviously hasn’t done that.
Let’s face it we haven’t missed him, and the team looks well balanced without him and his step overs, Carrick knows what he is doing and sees every player in training on a daily basis.
Unless he discovers last years form, he will be sold this summer.

Michael Carrick said a while back in one of his Media Conferences: Isaiah hasnt had the "football life", which almost all players have. He came straight from park football into the Championship and rocketed to the high of being in the team which beat United at Old Trafford. He has had to get used to being under the media microscope, fans having a high expectation of him, not being used to criticism in public. Carrick also said he felt mentality, physical and technichal ability needed to be developed and fine-tuned to get the best out of younger players. He has had to adjust being a long way from London and change life-style. Its a lot to ask. When you compare to Haydn Hackney [for example] joined Boro as an Under-10 year old.. Sonny Finch joined the club at U14 level. Ryan Giles came through Wolves Academy and Aaron Ramsey began as a 9 year old at Villa.

Agree with all of that. Hayden has been getting professional training for 10 years, and full time for 4. Isiah for about 3 years now. So he's well behind in his foundations, but he'll be 26 by the time he's caught up to where Hackney's coached experience is.

One thing has changed since this thread has started. Aaron Ramsey has come in who we can all agree looks a level above Jones.

If we do go up , Championship loan. Basically all clubs other than the top 2 would take him on loan. We need to make a profit on these youngsters if we end up at a level that is above their ability.
I think this is correct. We have improved and moved up a level (challenging for top 2 rather than challenging for top 6) and he hasn't kept with the pace of this if not has gone back over. He was getting plenty of matches up until Christmas under Carrick then slipped out of the picture.

It's interesting the comments about the triangles. The interplay between Dijksteel, Crooks and Jones was a major part of our play last season but all three have been bombed out. Just shows you the speed that football moves on.

All he has to do is readiscover the form that he previously showed. He has the ability - that was clear enough from teh many many games when he was by far our best player. Where has that player gone? I dont know what has gone wrong, but I see no reason why that ability cannot be unlocked agin.

Maybe, however some players just lose there form and confidence completely, just like Dele Ali.

MAybe he was playing above himself and will never do that again. Happens to footballers all the time they burst on the scene with a naivety and playing on adrenaline. The opposition know nothing about them, so get surprised at the pace. Then they settle down into their career, the opposition do their homework, they become ineffective, and it just isn't there. It's called the Cadamarteri effect.

I feel we missed a trick not bringing him on at 3 nil against reading and giving him a full half hour against a struggling team when we were flying, could have been an great opportunity to get his confidence flying. He is a winger after all, they are very much confidence players. a few successful dribbles or an assist and he will be a different player.

Yes, particularly the intricate triangular play with Dijksteel and Crooks which resulted in so many goals. He was crap from day one at that, his deft touch and accurate balls were lucky touches.

I think the strength in his play at that time was his pass and movement. I think his form owed a lot to Crooks receiving the ball and playing him in. I agree with you that he isn't the awful player some make out. He's had a bad few months.

I like Jones, I think there is a good champ player in there. I think our style has changed now and its not in his favour.

I know what you mean and I think had Ramsey not got two goals and been on a hat-trick, Jones might have got on sooner in that game.

Step overs etc you will get away with .....for so long , then pro's suss you , sadly he is a one trick pony who will have a career prob at lge 1 /2 level ,. Carrick challenged him to deliver ...he has not ....gone in summer

the one big asset he has is a turn of pace, running into space onto through balls is his thing, he needs his agent to make sure where ever he goes to, they play that low block, and play on the break into space, preferably with wing backs, and he'll be alright. Pick the wrong club and he could sink without a trace.
