Has football become to rigid?

Was thinking about Warnock's comments regarding Payero yesterday. He critisized him for overlapping Tav in the first half. Anybody who has played the game knows if a player wanders 'out of position' then somebody could easily fill in. My point is why sign a player to be 'creative' and map out a position for him in every scenario. Are players able to play the Le tissier/ Bergkamp role anymore? When you sign a creative player surely his defensive cababilties shouldn't be how his impact is judged.

All managers, including 🦕 like Warnock, seem to be obsessed with 'shape' and not getting caught out 'in transition'. Karanka was exactly the same. It bores me rigid.

Funny he never mentioned Hernandez being out of position for most of the game yesterday. I actually thought he did alright at left wing back, but for some reason after the first 15 minutes Peterborough decided to not to try and exploit him playing there.

It's the same with wingers being almost deemed not up to it these days if they're disciplined and don't track back enough to help out defensively. I know it's something which should happen, but ensure you have a solid, disciplined full-back playing behind them and it should allow them the freedom to concentrate more on their attacking play. The combination of the Shotton and Traore pairing is an example of this.

I agree with the OP but the thread title shouldn’t be “Has football become too rigid” but “Is our manager’s thinking too rigid”?

Players who go in academy’s from early ages are trained with the senior game in mind. Football at the top level is becoming robotic
You can see the Academy coaching effect in many of the youngsters that are discarded and end up playing further down the pyramid, whilst youngsters who haven't made the academies can play with more freedom and invention.
