Happy birthday Captain Cook!!! Born on this day 292 years ago in (East) Marton. Today is also the Birthplace Museum's 42nd birthday, built a stone's throw away from the site of the humble clay cottage where Scottish born farm labourer James Cook senior and his Thornaby born wife Grace Pace brought second son James into the world . The museum opened its doors in 1978 we look forward to the day when it can reopen to tell the tale of wonder of one of the world's greatest ever navigators but celebrate the peoples, flora and fauna that captivated him and his teams of experts on his three great world voyages.

Happy Birthday Captain Cook!

Happy Teesside Day to all

(I don't think there's a thing as Teesside Day, but if there is - today must surely be the day!!)

@rob_fmttm can we get a thing going to make it Happy Teesside Day - a bit like a celebration of all things Teesside

I probably ask this every year - but go and look up Captain James Cook birthday on wiki or google it and see what it says.
And do you know why?

Probably for the same reason why I was going to question if it really was his birthday or his birth date.

Yep..

"The Julian Calendar was replaced by the Gregorian Calendar, changing the formula for calculating leap years. The beginning of the legal new year was moved from March 25 to January 1. Finally, 11 days were dropped from the month of September 1752."
So google Cook and it says his birthday was 7th November 1728 - but the calendar changed in his lifetime.
We changed our calendar to fit in with Europe (Most of them had changed 200 years before) and to stop being out of sync with the calculation of Easter as the old calendar was inaccurate over time.
Before the change over. January 1st was the same year as December 31st. So 1751 did not end until March 25th when it became 1752.
When you look back over history and think back about dates it is best not to think too hard about what year it really was.

Happy birthday

Captain James Cook RN

Still blows my mind that there is an island and An entire body of water on the other side of the world named after a lad from Marton.
