Hangover from old board

I've been lurking on a part-time basis on this new board for most of the last week or so, and a few times i've felt like contributing but i haven't gone through with it.

When i've been examining the reasons why this might be, i figured out that it has nothing to do with how the new board looks, feels or smells, but everything to do with the toxic atmosphere from the old board caused by the endless yawnfest of trolling, the result of which had left me almost completely uninterested in even visiting the site.

It's true that this new place is still a board for the privileged and reasonable few until the mass-migration occurs, but even so i've just had that feeling that i can't be arsed dealing with trolls or those with general dickheadery as a default setting. the calibre of poster that had become so prevalent.

Although this new board seems pretty decent, so kudos for the development that has gone into it, it will all be for nothing as far as my posting habits are concerned if there is a return to the previous board's toxicity.

Anyway, I just wanted to break the cycle of not posting. How is everyone this fine thursday? I was convinced it was friday when i woke up (n)
Just come over to the new board thanks to Spanishman who gave us the option to look at the new board. Pity there is a lot of negative members on the old board with luck they won't come over ?

Spanishman has been great regarding the new & old board, keeping both sets updated & offering advice
Ta for that. In a previous part of my life I worked on the development and implementation of computer systems and networks for around 25 years. I also ran a 40+ person software development department with it's own help desk for a few years. That has taught me that communicating with the users is really important. Even, if like me, you do not know everything that is happening. Better to give people your best idea of the truth.

I'd suggest that anyone who is reticent to post on here give it a try and then we can gauge just how much admin/moderation is needed.

For posters like hopeso you'd hope they'd get the message and try and contribute rather than just snipe. For the unfunny, so-called comedy posters then the ignore button will be all that's needed to expunge their rubbish from view.

There a few who seem to be looking for a fight and few wind up merchants. I try and not let them affect me and if I run away (stop posting) they have succeeded. I still think most posters are decent, although may have contrasting views at times.

If it's any consolation, it was my 3rd round of redundancy risk in 18 months, with the latter two taking place inside of 6 months. Luckily managed to time a job offer for a promotion with this redundancy actually progressing, so have gotten a pay rise, promotion, and 2 and half months of gap time. It's been nice to spend time with family and relax after a fairly stressful sitiuation, and looking forward to new challenges.

Downside is I will be commuting to Newcastle instead of working from home.
Nice when that happens. When I moved back to the UK from Holland, I had a job offer in the works when the company I was working for announced redundancies. I went straight downstairs and volunteered. Had the whole summer off, covered by the redundancy payment.

Best of luck in the new job.

It will be considerably easier to deal with trolls and idiots on here. To be honest, on the old site it was a bit of a bind ... mainly because the worst offenders knew that they could make accounts that weren't vetted by us. I am afraid that one of the reasons that things got bad over the last 6 months is because I was away and just too busy to be dealing with d***heads on here every evening. I am back around now and happy to be substantially more pro-active in keeping the toxic stuff down. Most of the people that we have approved on this board already have proven to be decent and trouble free over a long period of time. Others have been rejected for the time being. I don't know about Rob, but I would agree that a few more moderators would be helpful. Any volunteers? You'll need the hide of a rhino.

I would be willing to offer my services in a very junior role. If it will help you shovel some effluent more efficiently.

It works best when Admin members are anonymous, so it doesn’t get personal. Admin by the rules with no personal agendas.

@borolad259 i think rule 7 could do with a reword, it comes off a bit sexist as it implies all blokes like swearing (they don’t) and women are delicate creatures that don’t like bad language (pretty much every female I’ve ever met is fairly contrary to that) & needs mollycoddling.

I get the idea behind the rule, but the way it’s worded is a bit ...outdated!

It's actually not about swearing. It's about the use of misogynistic terms and phrases that might make female posters uncomfortable .... e.g. the smashing in of back doors etc.
