Gyokores?

As said the issue with Gyokeres is that we ain't got £12m to £15m.

Although he is the right age to buy there is no guarantee he will improve - look at Assombalonga we bought him at his peak and lost £15m. His goalscoring record was way ahead of Gyokeres.

Nugent did a job in 2015/16 and he was 16 months older than Joao is now.

I tend to think moneyball with strikers i.e don't pay premiums for the flavour of the month players which we have done and lost a fortune.

Joao would be a canny signing. Forest are after him tho aren't they?

I think we probably want Gyokores as our main signing with gayle and a few others on loan. I suspect Gyokores hinges on the spence sale, which doesn't look like its going through until later in the window at the very best, so perhaps we will abandon the idea of Gyokores and go for Gayle plus a couple of loans. Either way we're looking strong!

I would say looking at how Gyokeres pulled our defence all over the place last season that this lad is the real deal
If we get him then it’s a fantastic signing

Top thinking, let’s wait another season instead until we really can’t afford him and he wouldn’t come.
It’s not top thinking, it’s far simpler, it’s called common sense. Get proven quality, not someone who’s done it for one season, and at great cost

OK Kevo.
Who exactly is "proven quality" and what state of their career are they and what is their fitness/injury record, and what wages do they demand and what potential do they have and what market value will they have in 1,2,3,4 years?????
And what is your FFP position and what is your ownership attitude and what is the potential for your club?
There are so many variables. It is not common sense it is complex.

Dwight Gayle proven is he?
23 goals for Newcastle 6 years ago and 23 goals for West Brom 4 years ago.
11 goals in 88 matches for Newcastle in between and since WBA.
He is 33 in October, injury prone and hardly a grafter.
On loan he will require a big loan fee and or high contribution to his massive wages. If we buy him there is no resale value given his age and he will want big wages to walk away from the 2 seasons left he has on his Newcastle contract.

There is a case for short term pure expense to achieve an objective, if the expense will make a huge difference, but normally I'd always look at investing rather than spending.

The view that we shouldn't be investing in quality and potential like Gyokeres, is seemingly based on previous bad investments. Surely the whole point of having Scott and Co at the club is to significantly improve the return on future investments?

Absolutely learn from previous mistakes, my niggling issue with Gyokeres is that he’s only done it for one season. I live in Swansea and the lads who watch them said when they had him a couple of years ago he was so bad it was funny! I take what you say but we as a club are not in any position to spunk money in the way we did in 2017, I’d like to think we’d maybe look at sensible loans, like Armstrong from Southampton.

The return on investments part of your post is for the suits behind desks to concern themselves with, I’d love the club to be rolling around in cash but I’m more bothered about a team that wins on the field more often that not, and in the league we’re in proven wins over potential for me.

A lot of folks seem to be hanging their hats on Gyokores being our main signing this summer. I mean he might be.. but maybe not (for whatever reason)

Baffled given our history that anyone would want to spunk large amounts of cash on a striker. It never has worked and it never will work.
Not sure how you can say that with confidence. It’s very possible we could spend 8-10 mill on Gyokores and he bangs the goals in to ensure he is promoted and rocketing his valuation at the same time. We will get it right one time.
