Govt lays groundwork for EU to take blame for UK's slow preparation for Brexit

In amongst everything else this week, yesterday Govt minister George Eustice said this to a commons committee:

The thread is worth a read.

Quote from DEFRA secretary George Eustice: "We can do all the work in the world to make sure our borders are ready ... But if when they arrive at the other side it's all a bit slipshod and disorganised and there's therefore chaos because of failure of the EU to plan..."

So this is the change in the line that will begin to be trotted out from Government ministers, despite warnings and exasperation from UK businesses and trade bodies that the new systems are nowhere near in place.

Not with twitter, but Barnier has been destroying Brexit " negotiations " since he was appointed. If Brussels really wanted a fair compromise he would have been replaced a long time ago.

Eustice comes across as truthful though.

Why would the EU want a ‘fair’ compromise? They want a compromise that works for them. To think otherwise is grossly naive.

The negotiations have been scuppered by UK intransigence and the idiotic idea that we have a strong negotiating hand and that the EU will cave in if we just stick to our position.

The govt can blame the EU all it likes, when there are queues at every port, shortages of food and medicines and businesses going bust the public won’t be concerned about whose fault it is they will want something doing about it.

What is wrong with what he said? If there are issues when people land at the other side that isn't the fault of the UK. If it is in the UK it is our issue. What you are suggesting is any issues when people get to Europe should be our issue too, which it isn't

Nothing wrong at all with what Eustice has said.

No. The EU is prepared, and has been ready for a while. The UK government isn't and is resorting to type - looking to divert responsibility.

The issues are this side as the road hauliers association were screaming at the government two weeks ago.

Not what he said though is it.... he is clearly saying the UK can do as much as it likes... but if at the other side it is a shambles then that is the fault of the EU, which it would be. Similarly if it is a shambles at our side, it is our fault not the EU's

From the reports two weeks ago, the UK is doing nothing so sort yourselves out or a shambles is guaranteed.

Of course there isn't. You've convinced me yet again. You're a star.
