Government reject free school meals over October holidays

Sadly its not just millionaire's. There are a lot of working / middle class people , who don't care about kids going hungry .

Amended it to ministers, but you're right. People who have the power to change this but choose not to. I mean how much would it cost in the scheme of things? I have no more words for this shower of offal.

The evening arrived; the boys took their places. The master, in his cook’s uniform, stationed himself at the copper; his pauper assistants ranged themselves beside him; the gruel was served out; and a long grace was said over short commons. The gruel disappeared; the boys whispered to each other and winked at Oliver; while his next neighbours nudged him. Child as he was, he was desperate with hunger, and reckless with misery. He rose from the table; and advancing to the master, basin and spoon in hand, said, somewhat alarmed at his own temerity,-

“Please, sir, I want some more.”

The master was a fat, healthy man; but he turned very pale. He gazed with stupefied astonishment on the small rebel for some seconds; and then clung for support to the copper. The assistants were paralyzed with wonder, the boys with fear.

“What!” said the master at length, in a faint voice.

“Please, sir,” replied Oliver, “I want some more.”

The master aimed a blow at Oliver’s head with the ladle, pinioned him in his arms, and shrieked aloud for the beadle.

Once you lob in “virtue signalling” as critique, you’ve lost. It’s the most thin-milked accusation I can imagine levelling at, well, anything. You’re not going to succeed in re-branding caring about each other as embarrassing Brendan Clarke-Smith you thick sour yogurt of a man.

Disappointing but not unexpected. If I was Marcus Rashford, I would refuse the MBE in light of this decision. I now feel it was awarded as a typically cynical move by the Government to make themselves look good in the eyes of the public and hope it would shut him up when they withdraw the service a few weeks later. He has been cynically exploited, played like a Government puppet for a temporary good news story by Johnson, Cummings et al in my view.

My respect will rise even further for Rashford, were he to have the will to reject the ‘honour’ in light of recent events.

Love him to do that too but I am sure his advisers would say why give the Daily Mail another stick to beat him with which is what they would try to do and distract from the need to get these vouchers issued,

Let's just take a minute to praise the five Tory MPs with a conscience

Caroline Ansell (Eastbourne)
Robert Halfon (Harlow)
Jason McCartney (Colne Valley)
Anne Marie Morris (Newton Abbot)
Holly Mumby-Croft (Scunthorpe)

Proof that not all Tories are scum.

Wouldn’t that be great (y)
My understanding of these things is you get told you are getting an award of this kind in advance. They go on to ask if you will accept if they make the offer.
He must have agreed to accept.
On that basis - even better if he told them to stuff it.

On another note - for Tories this has nothing to do with poor kids. It is about ‘winning’ and demonstrating they won’t be pushed around.
The kids are just collateral damage.
Their kids will have big bellies at xmas and beyond.

I appreciate your point and it is fair comment. However, the Government have also put him in a position where accepting it can leave him open to criticism too. I feel for the lad, he must be hurting today. He has my respect no matter what. I think rejecting it would maintain his high moral standing and be a blow to the Government especially in the North West, where the Tories are losing friends hand over fist.
