Golf is back

I think some courses could possibly have stayed open to members, if their booking system could have been managed by someone working alone, or from home, and so none of the course staff were at increased risk. Nearly every golf course seemed to have system in place to handle this in March, until it was just pulled altogether for the lock-down. No need for any cash transactions, pro shops and I can't recall anyone I've ever played with going back to the club house for a slash during a round for that matter. They effectively could have just left the players to it, and said "you're getting no support other than a tee time", and I'm sure golfers would have been made up. Players of other sports would have gone bananas though.

Even as a golfer, I'm still not convinced this would have been a good idea though, not because it wouldn't have been safe, more because a lot of people are tossers (even more so golfers), and if you give them an inch they will take a mile. But if these people were not playing golf, they would still just be going for a paper every day, or to the supermarket 5 times a week, they would still find a way to be tossers.

There is another line of thinking though, if golf hadn't been banned it could have saved a few potential divorces I reckon. Nearly every older bloke I've played with whinges about his missus or wife, no end. There's going to be tons of couples splitting up when this is done, where it's not been practical to split up during lock down. Playing golf is the only way to get away for a lot of people.

What did you shoot?
You really do not want to know. My official handicap is 7.3. My society one is 9.3. I did not get anywhere near that. Loads of bogeys, the occasional double bogey and a single par. Only lost one ball though. Which is not bad for the first time playing. Without having any practice at all. Will post some pictures of the course later. After processing the results of the quiz.

I don't think there should be anything stopping golfers being able to play whilst socially distancing. The problem is that with only a limited number of activities that people can do, it will become overly popular and if you don't have staff there policing it then there will be people showing up to play that shouldn't. There will also be a load of people who have always wanted to play golf but never had the time that suddenly do. Everywhere will be rammed. That will lead to pile-ups around tees and greens and reduce the ability to keep a safe distance.

Here are some photos of the course from today...

Nice one Spanishman. I've just managed to fight my way through the servers to book Thursday and next Monday. Our club has allowed members to play twice in each 7 rolling days, which is sensible. Can't wait.
We've got inverted cups, with the way and pretty comprehensive safety rules throughout.

Class Spanishman 👍🏻 Hope you enjoyed it!

I can’t wait to get back out, my course reopens tomorrow but with only something like 100 places and 600 odd members think I’ll struggle 🤣 but will hopefully get out Friday aft and Saturday or Sunday. We’re allowed to play 3 times in a 7 day period so will get a game at some point which is fine by me.

My worry had always been with sports like golf starting up first, many others will take the attitude that if they can play golf I can have 40 people round for a BBQ.

Wilton rules - members only for now, 1 or 2 players only, tee times must be booked, weekend tee times reserved for those who can’t play on a weekday. Seems fair enough to get moving again. Looking forward to Sunday...

Well i’ve signed up for Billinghams lifestyle membership.......

won a Ping G410 cross over no 2 Driving Iron and a Sim Max no 4 Hybrid. Cant wait to smash these onto the adjacent fairways 😂

can’t wait to get started all over again

Throston accepting pay and play. Played there today. Its in good nick.Mine doesnt open until Saturday I was in agony with ongoing foot problems and played rubbish but was still so happy to be out on a course.

JRD if you can hit the driving iron I won't be asking you to my club near York - just too good for me but enjoy the new clubs.

Playing Sun,Tue and Thurs next week.

Played with a mate just allowed the 9.. would attach a pic but it's 'too large' course was in v good condition +9 which is poor but very rusty with no driving range beforehand.
I've got to say there's absolutely no reason why the group's should be limited to 2 people there's naturally a 2 metre gap 95% of the time.
More idiocy from the government, just so that people don't have too good a time, it might spread some happy healthy vibes.

Problem with more than 2 players Alvez is golfers naturally stand near each other when a 3rd or 4th player tees off or after putting out.

Before the lockdown social distancing was poor at my club amongst members and particularly visiting groups.

Just no. There's was loads of people around today and they were all observing best behaviour outside where the risk is practically 0 anyway, everyone has said 2 metres is unnecessary but we did it because people are too dense if you say 1 metre.

Hope you enjoyed it. We are stepping up a gear now. In a 4 ball for18 holes tomorrow with 2 friends (married couple - sharing a buggy). Then after a day off on Monday we have another 18 holes with a different friend on Tuesday.
