Going Out this Winter

If its £8 to have the heating on and lights on in the winter's evening - might it be cheaper to walk to your local Witherspoon's pub for the evening and say drink 2 pints over 3 hours to save money?

I am not a big fan of Wetherspoons but I picked them because they are cheap (£2.20 pints), they are usually big so you can stay there without being noticed and there are a lot of them.

They're always busy, and not just with wasps and flies. The older gangs of women use them as their meeting joints through the day. The other cafes will be struggling to compete with the current economic fiasco the Tories and Brexit have created

I think more councils need to follow the lead of Gateshead - organising halls where people can keep warm.

I dont, I think the government need to make such initiatives irrelevant rather than defaulting to charity, or people's goodwill, for normal working people to survive.

Things like that are an absolute disgrace and a damning indictment of the state this country is in at the moment.

Oh don't get me wrong, it is a disgrace that a local council should have to put such a plan in place.

The obvious answer is energy producers (not necessarily your supplier). For example Qatar's income must be up 5 or 6 times what it used to be. They must be the biggest exporter of gas nowadays.

As a country we have to invest in more Solar and Wind and Nuclear and quickly.

It is an appalling state but its part of the increasing income/wealth divide over the last 43 years. kj

I’m not so sure, just checked the current generation mix and it is about 30% Renewables and 20% nuclear, all of which is sourced and generated in this country.

I think the energy market is the problem and as U.K. consumers we are left to simply ride the waves of the global market regardless of where the power is coming from or which company generates it.

We need the next 50% of renewables to be publicly funded and owned. We can't leave ourselves open to the 'market' nonsense as we have done since Thatcher tore the country to bits. It needs rebuilding.
