Goal scoring defenders at Boro

I know I shouldn't complain about ANYTHING at present, but it really is laughable how few goals have been scored by Fry and Lenihan. You'd think they'd be good for the odd header, but that well is incredibly dry.

One of my favourite ever Boro goals scored by a defender was Amorebieta in the 93rd minute of the play-off semi at Brentford. He'd been brought on to shore up the defence and take a 1-1 draw back to our place, but instead he went up for a corner and spanked one into the bottom corner. I was in with the Brentford fans and had to sit on my hands.

Steve Vickers knew where the goal was when we signed him. He scored a class goal at Roker Park early on, may even have been his debut. He was a free-kick specialist at Tranmere - and scored a belting free-kick at Ayresome Park once - but I don’t ever remember him taking any for Boro.

Gianluca Festa popped up with a few too

I remember this game, I'm sure I watched it on itv at the time, Roger Thames was the commentator, I thought this was vickers debut too, wasn't sure though.

I was there as my nana bought me a ticket for my birthday! It was absolutely Baltic, the pitch was borderline frozen and we lost 2-1. Vickers’ goal was quality, he slammed in at the back post.

Remember before the game Roger Tames had to walk past the whole away end to his gantry and he got absolute dog’s abuse.

That's right, I remember his goal, didn't we have that purple/maroon away shirt that day too

Stevie Vickers scored a long free kick in a midweek evening game at Derby in the 90s (may have been a touch to him first)
The wife and I had complimentary tickets from one of the players but tickets were in the Derby main stand. We said we'd better keep quiet if we score but couldn't contain ourselves. As it happens there were dozens of Boro fans in the stand and we were all duly moved to where the rest of the Boro fans were in the pouring rain down below.

Just watched that on YouTube! He smashed it in from fully 30 yards, though you’d think the Derby ‘keeper would’ve been disappointed with it. I saw that Vickers scored 3 goals in his first 5 or 6 games for us but then nothing for until New Year’s Eve, when he scored another long-range effort at Stoke. I was at that match as well and it was utterly miserable. We lost 3-1 and the Stoke fans above us were throwing bottles of p*ss down onto the Boro fans. A horrible day. I think my Dad had a much better time wandering around the potteries and looking at the nice things.
