Giles' Own Goal

Did Quedrue score a similarly bizarre own goal or have I got that wrong? Something about Boro left backs / left wing backs and own goals, I remember George Friend scoring a couple.

Edit* remind me to watch videos already posted on the thread 😂

I'm not so bothered about the OG, these things happen and I suppose it was on his right foot and he was off balance, running toward goal. He'll create more goals in the other box I expect.

I'm more concerned that he wasn't aware there was nobody behind him, but even then it's hard to let a ball go across the face of goal like that.

It was just as much Howson's fault mind, Howson too slow getting out (which played the run onside), then he let the man go, which gave the striker an easy run on Lenihan. Suppose Lenihan could have been closer and doubled up on him too mind, as he wasn't doing anything else, like the other 5 defenders and keeper we had free in the box.

Didn't look quite so bad in the replay as it did in real time.

He should be proud of how he responded: his drive and determination going forward was one of the noticable aspects of our strong finish to the game. No hiding from him.

A nod to Steffan too; when many players turned away, he was the one giving Giles a pat on the back and getting him back in the game.

Yes I noticed that from Steffen, FairPlay to him

Just one of those things, wrong foot. Perhaps a failure of his awareness? But that's a little critical he tried to do the right thing and perhaps a little bobble made it come off the outside of his foot rather than instep?

Dunno. Anyhoo. Great that he didn't dwell on it and continued to play his role.

His body shape was all wrong, he was facing his own goal with his back to the man behind him. If he turns his body he will be able to see the ball coming in and also the run his man is making.
So he would see that the run is not in behind him but also be facing upfield when trying to clear the ball rather than his own goal.
Easier said than done in a few seconds like but it's what top defenders would be doing.

i thought about Whelan as soon as it happens. I don't remember many other ridiculous og scored by us in my time. Didn't Parks or Cooper lob one back into his own net with an attempted backpass one? I'm sure it happened but i can't quite recall it.

This Jamie Pollock effort is a cracker when he was at Man City. Quite Gazza-esque, just at the wrong end

Giles has a left foot which is an absolute wand, unfortunately his right appears to be a brick on a piece of rope. But his effort comes nowhere near this classic .......................................

The Pollock one is the best ever for me. Normally with own goals there's some sort of accident or catastrophe, but with Pollock's everything he did was exactly as intended.
