He wants to increase the size of goal posts. For me it's a no.

Gigi Buffon has suggested the possibility of increasing the size of goals…

"We could start thinking about it... the size of the goalposts was determined in 1875. They were probably too big for the anthropometric values of that time."

"Probably, it was right back then. But now, seeing some athletes and goalkeepers, you can think about it."

"Even in volleyball, they discuss the height of the net – I have sisters who play volleyball, so I’m aware of the issue."

“Of course, it’s not up to me to decide. Goalkeepers have become bigger, that’s true, but outfield players have also become faster, unpredictable, and hit harder."

"Players’ technique is getting better. But you can see the impact of the goalkeeper’s height on long shots. 30 years ago, there were 10 goals for every 50 shots. Today, 3 out of 50 is a lot." (@tuttosport)

Interesting points, but in 1875 games were frequently high scoring afairs and it's not like games lack enough goals in the modern game.

Make it really fun and let each team pick one game each season where they play with double size goals, but they also have to play one fixture with half size goals too.

What about small goalkeepers though? Like Iker Casillas was only 6ft, which is quite small for goalkeepers. Also conveniently he says it after he's retired

It's fine as it is.

It would also re-open the can of worms about the size of the goal in women's football.

The standard of goalkeeping has improved to the point that it's often not spoken about anymore, but increasing the height and width would obviously change that.

He has a point, but it's a no for me.

We can tinker with the offside rule etc. without doing too much harm, but if you change the goal size, suddenly any new goalscoring records have a * for "larger goals" next to them.

Besides, I don't see a reduction in the number of goals scored. If anything the trend has been steadily upwards. As far as the PL goes, the first season averaged 2.64 goals/game. Thus far this season it's 3.13, so roughly a 20% increase

It's not a straight linear increase of course, but an overall trend upwards is noticable.

The weight of boots and balls and speed of the pitches back then would surely offset any benefits gained by having taller keepers. Players are faster and are covering far more distance in a game than they did then. Should we make the pitches bigger to compensate for that too?

Make the goals bigger.......be even more embarrassing for Jones.

Harsh that like. Probably get reported to the ECHR.🙄

It is still spoken about. There are still loads of goals that go in that are just because keepers can't reach. You can hit a shot fairly comfortably with a bit of time/space into the top corner. In men's football you have to hit the ball with a lot of power with that accuracy to score otherwise the keeper will stop it. In women's (and junior football) you don't need the power so it doesn't have to be anything special.

I think fewer long range goals are scored these days because of other reasons than just goalkeepers being taller. The way defenses are organised now kind of encourage low percentage long shots so the best chances from range aren't taken because a better close range chance is available or shots are accurate shots are blocked and mostly unlikely shots get through.

Never happen in my view.

In womens football they should in fact be smaller as on the whole women are smaller, so if they make them bigger it would be farcical for them
