Gibson gets unfair stick

This bloke has given this club the best years it witnessed. People are quick to use opinion to slam him. They are quick to twist his words to slam him

Gibson doesn’t employ people on the basis he thinks they’ll fair. Every manager is a gamble

Robson - masterstroke
McLaren - masterstroke (but I believe he could have achieved more)
Southgate - big gamble, made mistake sacking him when he did. Did have us rallying at one point
Strachan - established manager with reputation, therefore I believe any of us would have done it back him based on that. Didn’t work, can’t blame gibbo.
Mowbray. — did was required, overachieved given the backing. Sour ending
Karanka - masterstroke
Monk - who knows what could have been if given time. Proved capable before and after us
Pulis - established manager with reputation, worst football we have ever seen, but at appointment
majority happy with it
Woodgate - worst rookie appointment we’ve had hasn’t worked out

It’s alright judging his decisions on hindsight but there wasn’t a lot wrong at the time of appointing these

All chairman’s make mistakes. Give him a break

Robson - Great

El Tel - kept us up, great.

McClaren - can’t argue, disappointed he was always courting other clubs.

Southgate - the cheap option.

Strachan - Leeds legend. Always fighting relegation with Coventry. Didn’t want him at the time

Karanka - thank you Peter Kenyon.

Monk - Bent as ...... diddled and fiddled. Gibson must hate him.

Pulis - didn’t want him. Gibson became way too friendly with him.

Woodgate - cheap and nasty. Does a great PowerPoint presentation though.

Sorry Gaz but I can’t see how Pulis’ football was worse than this season’s.

I agree about Southgate, he should have been sacked 4 months before we went down, not 6 months after.

Agree with most of your other comments, although your Monk view could be interpreted as criticism of Gibson.

It’s also true to say that no one wanted Woodgate as Michael says above.

Sacking Karanka and not giving him the opportunity to take us straight back up was one of his biggest mistakes.

I'm almost certain he would have taken us straight back up, and we could be an established Premier League club right now.
No sacking him and giving the job to the man who put the cones out for Steve Bruce ( he’s now gone back to it) as our manager how the hell agnew got the job in the premier league I’ll never know.

Your verdict on Mowbray?

It was more that I think monk didn’t give Gibson a choice by being a snake, Which didn’t come across in the original post. find the monk one interesting. There was defo a buzz when we got him though

Your verdict on Mowbray?
Started well, did Gibson a huge favour by coming in. Made some very good signings. Sadly tainted by his final 33 games - that was awful. Focused way too in the opposition and I’m not sure he employed much discipline.

He gets stick because he’s just appointed a bloke no other chairman would have taken a chance on..... because, errr, he’s from Middlesbrough.

Where was that Head of Recruitment Mr Bevington from again? The one that disappeared again after about 18 months was it, still we have his legacy

If you pay and go I think you have a reason to have a dig if you want to. Hes not beyond criticism, but the hatred is really uncalled for.

We didn't accomplish a lot in the 110 ten years before he became involved with us.. So from my start in 1968 Stan finished 4th at best, Big Jack took Stans team up on record points level and barring a bit of up to 6th round cup excitement we were top of the under achievers imho.

Hes changed the club beyond recognition. I agree hes made mistakes, but I will always stick by him, hes local and despite not having a embroidered education his background (not some middle class robber)probably took the club where it should have always been.

Fire away at him if you want, but if you dont go at least now and again you are hardly in a spot to criticise him are you.

OP, you think McLaren could have achieved more but not Robson?

Robson was a fantastic appointment for many reasons, but ultimately he still underachieved for me. Even without the 3 points debacle we should have stayed up easily. At the time we could compete financially with most. The players we had lined up! It was a massive missed opportunity. By the time we got promoted again the moment had gone.

Gibsons commitment to the club is beyond doubt. But his decision making is atrocious.

It's not just managerial appointments, but the choices he's made since we were last promoted. The premier League money was a massive windfall and it's been completely frittered away. In fact despite all the hard lessons of the past it seems we still managed to overspend and gamble recklessly. It's as if not bouncing straight back never crossed his mind. There certainly seems to have been no planning for that eventuality.

Hmm. I was always very apathetic about the Monk appointment personally. But I also remember feeling like there was no one available who excited me at the time. I did get excited when we started blowing the cash, and it seems like Gibson blames our current predicated on him. Which might well be fair, who knows.

It IS justified, we’ve had three seasons of top flight football since Eindhoven- that’s 14 years ago now. The only decision right since then was Karanka and that was down to Kenyon, an even then Gibson fcuked it up by not backing him in the January window when we had a chance of staying up
