Get your vitamin D

There's a lot of quackery surrounding this epidemic, so I thought long and hard before writing this. I have been following/researching global studies into vitamin D for nigh on a decade now.... originally it was with a view to making a television programme about it.

Vitamin D ... not a vitamin really ... it's a hormone. We produce it when certain frequencies of UV light hit our skin. If we are light skinned, we produce it more quickly than if we are dark skinned.

The headline news is that it may well have significant protective properties where covid 19 is concerned: it is crucial to the regulation of our immune systems, we have seasonal patterns of deficiency which correlate with corona virus vulnerability, it compromises this particular coronavirus' spike proteins that allow it to bind onto our cells and it helps to regulate our response to the virus. Evidence is growing that groups deficient in vitamin D (the old, diabetics, ethnic groups with dark skin) correlate with the groups most at risk from becoming seriously ill (from a virus that most people will shrug off).

I can link to a basket full of writing in the BMJ and other such reputable sources but, to be honest, it would be a waste of time. You'd be better off spending that time grabbing some high strength codliver oil capsules, vitamin D3 supplements or just exposing some skin to sunshine. It won't harm you and it night just save you from getting very sick.

If I get sick and die, you can disregard this, as I've been dosing on vit D for years.

I also take vitamin D supplement, well actually it’s combined with a calcium and magnesium supplement - thanks for the info, there might be something in that hypothesis

It might make sense as it's clear that African Americans here are more likely to die from it than white people. That could also be explained by the fact that they are more likely to be disadvantaged.

Horrible to think, but it may turn out that locking people inside might turn out to be a colossal mistake. Social distancing YES. Locking people away from sunlight? I hope we all learn from this.

Fruit, vegetables and sunshine (or vitamin D supplement if you don't have access to the outdoors).
It’s actually not an easy task to get your recommended daily dose of vitamin D - sunlight does provide you with some of course but how easy is it to get enough ? Not that easy, especially in winter or if you work indoors mainly for example. Most people will not get their recommended dose every day of their lives - a day on the beer with a pizza an a kebab for example ain’t gonna do it

In summer, 10-15 minutes will give you 10x the UV-B you need with bare arms and face, as long as you don't use suncream. In Winter, it is difficult to get sufficient UV-B in the UK.

So what do you get vitamin D from?
I just had some banana and pineapple in yogurt and some pasta with pesto green beans and potatoe. Is it in that?
The only time I've got any sun in the last month or so is when I left the house once to go shopping and once to go for a walk. I do have vitamin D tablets though which I got cos my flat doesn't get a lot of sun.

Just checked my multivitamin tablets, which were originally recommended to me by my ophthalmogist. Plenty of vitamin D there. (y)

I had been taking a high strength Vit D supplement for about a year. What it did for me was put me in hospital twice with kidney stones.

Advice is only to dose high over a short term if you are deficient (or likely to be).

I take cod liver oil every day for mine .... which has all the added bonus of omega acids etc
