Personally I think Scholes has been overhyped ever since Zidane and Xavi made some complimentary comments on him:

However...

During his 20 year career there were 14 different winners of United’s player of the year award. Scholes was never one of them.

For a player supposedly so respected by his peers, he never came close to a podium Ballon d'Or finish and never made the World XI.

In comparison Lampard and Gerrard's highest finishes were 2nd and 3rd respectively. They also made multiple World XI appearances.

Furthermore they (lamps and Gerrard) both received 8 World XI nominations compared to Scholes' 2.

In his 20 year Premier League career, only TWICE did Scholes make the Premier League Team of the Season.

It took Yaya Toure just 4 years to equal this number while Gerrard made 8 appearances with Lampard making 5.

He was never the journalists, fans or players Premier League player of the year. Lampard and Gerrard have 6 between them.

The reason I say Scholes is I love the way he bossed games from midfield towards the end of his career without moving . Not much in it between the 3 of them in my opinion. Scholes the best though imo, but if I could for a pint with one of them would Definetly be Lampard. Scholes and Stevie have odd personalities

At international level Gerrard was the best, but he still never hit top gear.

I rate them all pretty much equally, loved watching them all, I've always favoured Lampard over Gerrard. I enjoyed watching Beckham in his prime over all 3 of them.

I think the strengths of the team were in other areas but the 3 midfielders listed above came up short against the big players from other countries, they were snuffed out and the engine room of the team struggled. The talents of the likes of Beckham, Rooney and Owen were largely wasted.
