Germany holiday advice

Thinking of basing ourselves in Nuremberg for 10/14 days with a couple of 2/3 night stops in towns nearby eg Regensburg.

Has anyone any knowledge of the area?

We did a similar trip a few years ago with Krakow as our base and loved it.

Looking to do similar for this area but have no real knowledge of it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Been to Nurembourg a couple of times once during WC 2006 and then the Xmas markets 2009.

Perfect place to be based. You are on the train lines to the beautiful town of Bamberg and Ingolstadt. Nurembourg city itself is stunning Especially the old town which is one of the best there is. Rothenburg and Regensberg are also easy to get to. Go for it.

Nuremburg is great, as is Regensburg. It's a beautiful part of the country. Great pubs and breweries.

Another big thumbs up for Nuremburg: interesting history, both medieval and modern. I found the courts for the Nuremberg Trials were particularly interesting.

The Nuremberg card, available from the tourist office, was pretty good value, although I felt the need to run around making the most of it, as I always do we these sorts of deal.

We were surprised to walk into as open a red light district as I've seen outside of Amsterdam when walking round the walls. Like a combination of Amsterdam and York.

Enjoyed the Rauchbier in Bamburg, but I'm not sure how much of it I could drink.

I've been to Wurtzburg some years ago - it's about 20Ks from Nuremberg.

If you can time it for the wine festivals its absolutely brilliant - Very happy memories of Germany - love the place!

Never ever been to Nuremberg but will get there eventually. Germany's beer capital Bamberg is less than 45 minutes away on public transport and I've always wanted to visit that town.

Great part of Germany, Nuremberg very under rated. As mentioned above if you like beer Nuremberg, Regensburg and Bamberg are fantastic.
Both 45-60 minutes away but worth an overnight stay. I assume you're off in the summer so no football involved?
If you're flying over consider Frankfurt rather than Munich. Lufthansa fly regular from Manchester and you can add on a train ticket that allows you to use the first available service rather than booking a set train. You can get a direct service from the airport in about 2 hours.
Fast train from Munich is about an hour but its about 50 mins into town from the airport as well. That said Munich is another place worth a visit.
God I've missed going to Germany these last 2 years.

It may be of interest: Lufthansa fly direct to Frankfurt from Newcastle now.

Just booked. Flying into Nuremberg from Stansted, so a bit of a drive this end but dead easy once landed.

Thanks for the info everybody. Going in June, so not long to wait.

May be more expensive but there is a train from Frankfurt Airport to Nuremberg every 40 minutes so a quick trip to Newcastle and you're almost there.

As a matter of interest It’s a much shorter train journey from Munich to Nurembourg than Frankfurt. Half the time.

Its a right slog to Stansted! No seriously enjoy yourself and its only 15 mins into town on the U Bahn, only a small airport as well.
Make sure you visit Bamberg, 10 breweries - not bad for a population of about 70000!

This might also be of interest to anyone heading to Germany this Summer: 9 euros for all local public transport for a month. Not 100% certain it applies to tourists, but I've not seen that it doesn't. It doesn't apply to main Intercity trains, but it does to all local busses, trams, U-bahn etc.

It's too late I'm afraid. We were looking at doing the lot by train, with overnight stops in Paris and Cologne going and Stuttgart and Paris on the return leg but went for the flight.
It's a lot easier for me because I live in London but I've been to Germany numerous times in the past 10 years and I've gone by train every time.
