George Courtney RIP

He reffed my son and I at a Riverside charity game and let both the young linos have a spell in the middle which I thought was a nice thing to do. RIP George

Met him once at an away game, think it was Tranmere in the early 90’s - seemed like a decent fella, and as said a top ref RIP George

Was a good mate of the brother in law who himself passed away himself 10 years ago, he made to league line only, George all the way. RIP

Knew George very well.He played golf at my club Bishop Auckland.Always had plenty of crack about all things Boro for whom he said he always had an affection for.
Lovely larger than life character. Will be sadly missed.RIP.

Very sad news - I got to know him very well when he took the post heading up the Boro community projects that are now MFC Foundation. He was full of enthusiasm for football and for the way football could unify, unite and reach out to help those vulnerable or struggling in the community. RIP

Sad news. Remember our junior school team playing the junior school team where he taught and ran the football team.

Reffed the 1980 FA Cup Final when West Ham beat Arsenal but noteable for an incident involving Paul Allen and Willie Young. Allen was scythed down by Young as he was bearing down on goal. The Arsenal defender was given a yellow card. It paved the way for the debate which led to red cads for denying goal scoring opportunities. Courtney himself said he would have liked to have given Young a red card but that the law interpretation didn’t give him that freedom.

His last game was the Championship play off final of 1992. A long career Into his 50s.

RIP
