Gazette openly question gestede selection for Swansea game

In truth I rarely see him referred to as a Boro legend.

Am I allowed to say, now, that I don't think he'd have played for England that much more without injury? As good as he was, even when fit he wasn't as consistent as Campbell, Ferdinand or Terry.

There, said it.
No-one is gonna argue with you on that score now atypical!

Exactly. The Gestede decision was just the final piece of the ever fractured jigsaw puzzle. Most managers will have something about them be it motivation, ability to spot a player, get a striker finding the net again. I can't find a single thing that Woodgate had in his locker. THE craziest, most baffling decision that Gibson has made in my opinion. Scouring the football world only to find Woodgate. Jesus!

Woodgate's only positive was bringing through the likes of Spence and Coulson, but even then he went and mucked that up by dropping Spence for seemingly no reason after our best run of form of the season.

He's probably the worst manager we've had, albeit in very difficult circumstances.
I was glad he left as a player to Spurs, as his fitness record was so precarious.
He is absolutely not a Boro legend.

But he was an absolutely fantastic centre back - imho he was better than Ferdinand when the pair were at Leeds (and I'm far from alone in thinking that, all Leeds would say that and they should know)
I think he was a better player at his peak than Campbell, Ferdinand and Terry. Fitness, lifestyle and attitude were Woodgate's obvious problems.

The bloke will be badly bruised and simply should never have been appointed, but lets not make stuff up about him as a player.

He was a great player on his day and would have been an England regular IMO

It's impossible to say re: England because he was never consistently fit after the trial. You could see his class in the odd game/run of games. I think his best was as good as those 3, but how often did you see it?

Definitely not a Boro legend. He probably only just about qualifies as a Leeds legend on the back of that champions League semi final run. Fairly modest impact every other club he's been at.

Him and Ledley King would have been the best ever CB partnership for England if they weren't both made of glass.

Shame.

I hoped he would make a go of it. I think that in principle looking for a "new" way to take the club forward is a sound idea. Finding a new manager/coach/motivator isn't easy. I would rather we look in future at a young manager from a lower league that we can build a team around.

But the single most important thing is that we improve our scouting. We do alright at picking up young players and bringing in the occasional find from the pyramid (Wing) but we have consistently paid too much for at best ordinary.

Not forgetting of course that he had specifically signed Dijksteel & Bola to take their places in the squad who were awful/injured in equal measure, he only played them out of necessity really as his signings were duffers.

Tallentire wasn't the only person "bigging him up". A few people on here had been extolling his talents lately.🤡 Gestede I mean, not Woody. Woodgate was class as a player.

You're right. He was a truly magnificent footballer, who could glide through games. Only better for me, is Maddren at Boro. Great player but awful manager.

You should have a look at his Instagram page where thousands of his followers are paying homage and referring to him as a Boro legend.

Not making anything up, I just don't think he was as good on a consistent basis as those 3. I think he was better than King if that helps clarify.

I will argue against that. Woodgate could read the game better than any of them and played with more class than either Campbell or Terry who were a bit wooden and awkward at times. I think he could have been like a new Bobby Moore for the England team if he hadn’t been injured so much.

I agree. I think he was the best centre back of that era, I honestly do. Never seen a player glide through games like he did in his prime. You only have to look at his Boro debut when Henry didn't get a kick.

People say the same about Ledley King. It's all ifs and buts but I imagine his lifestyle didn't help his injury record over the years.

In his pomp he was a phenomenal player (Madrid wouldnt have signed him otherwise) but we never really saw him in his pomp but he was a great player no doubting that.
