Well said...

“ News that Gestede had shown such little appetite to help Boro out of trouble in the last month of the season made his selection in the side a week earlier against Swansea even more baffling.”

“ He was ineffective that day, which pretty much summed up his time at the club. Indeed, his costly miss against the same opponents back in April, 2017 was sadly a sign of things to come.”

it was baffling at the time but knowing now what we know it was unforgivable.

True

but it’s nice to see this issue that so irked me is now being openly questioned.

as I said on here. How did this crazy decision make fletcher and brit feel m, Knowing “mr I couldn’t give a toss” is picked over them.

I had a lot of time for woody before but that team selection warranted the sacking alone.

Well if we'd won or got a draw in that match he'd probably still be in a job now. In some ways it might not be a bad thing we lost.
I said after the defat that this is prob going to save us as hopefully it will make gibson act, thankfully he did. So yes it definitely saved or has the potential to save our season.

I had no time for him after he told us the league table tells lie. The head of a football club coming out with something like that just beggars belief. You need a certain amount of intelligence as a football manager and you need to be able to articulate your philosophy. He had neither. As I said in another post, I just want to erase him from my memory.

Typical Gazette stating the obvious after personnel have left the club. Questions should have been asked when we signed Gestede and appointed Woodgate, both were staggeringly bad decisions and it was obvious at the time they were poor.

I find it impossible to comprehend how anyone in the club hierarchy could think they would bring success.

Woody is not the only manager we have seen in recent years with some baffling selections or team formations. Gary Monk was shocking at times. Even Aitor had some strange habits with the likes of Stuani stuck out on the wing, Albert kicked out of the club and Ayala not played in the premier league.
Pulis wouldn’t play Bamford, although he was better than Karanka, Agnew and Monk in realising that the boy Adama could actually play a bit If used correctly.

In all walks of life you need the right people in the right positions doing jobs they are capable of doing and many managers get it wrong, it’s not as easy as the good managers make it look.

I think what made last weeks so bad though was , we hadn’t played a game for 3 month. He had a lot of thinking time and reflection to think what’s gone wrong how can he make things better. We had Roberts, Fletcher, Assombalonga, Tav all fit and available and he goes with an out of contract donkey in Gestede and a player in Nmecha who has struggled badly since his arrival. It was astonishing.

Exactly. The Gestede decision was just the final piece of the ever fractured jigsaw puzzle. Most managers will have something about them be it motivation, ability to spot a player, get a striker finding the net again. I can't find a single thing that Woodgate had in his locker. THE craziest, most baffling decision that Gibson has made in my opinion. Scouring the football world only to find Woodgate. Jesus!

Yes that was a truly unfathomable comment, wrong in so many ways.

I honestly think a big part of the problem with Woodgate was an overinflated opinion of his own ability and lack of self awareness. There's self confidence and then there's delusion. He openly stated he didn't need an experienced voice on his coaching staff because he backed himself and had Pulis' phone number (or words to that effect).

It's almost as if he was trying to be too clever just to prove he was as good as he seemed to think he was. "We're struggling for goals so I'll leave out my top scorers, it's a cunning plan".

Probably didn't help having those 4 wins on the bounce by messing about with the team game to game. Bet he thought he was Guardiola at the time. Looks very much like that was much more luck than judgement now.

It was simple he was a local lad who played for England and Real Madrid that was pretty much it.
Which is bizzare considering he only played 9 times for Real Madrid in 3 years. Granted one of those years he was on loan to us and made 30 appearances.

310 appearances in his playing career staggered me. Never realised his injury record was that bad.

Irks me when he's called a Boro legend too, in 3 stints, his 2 full time and 1 loan stint here, he only played 103 times. He played for Leeds 104 times.

He had his chance and didn’t take it.

The Swansea match was terrible in all sorts of ways and he paid the ultimate price for it being a complete shambles.

Just as bad for me was playing Friend and Howson as orthodox fullbacks v Swansea against a couple of the quickest wide players in the league. He had Coulson and Spence both available ??? They tore us to shreds down the flanks....

In truth I rarely see him referred to as a Boro legend.

Am I allowed to say, now, that I don't think he'd have played for England that much more without injury? As good as he was, even when fit he wasn't as consistent as Campbell, Ferdinand or Terry.

There, said it.
