Gazette End of Season Player Ratings

56th and 82nd minute and fourth highest Boro scorer in goals per minute.
Mendez-Laing scored one and made one!

Also, I think we are in agreement on Lewis Wing TBH - I think we both like him and think he was very unfortunate to be out on loan when he had something to offer the Boro. Especially towards the end of the campaign, when midfield legs were injured or tired. We left ourselves with little or no way of rotating, unless dipping into the youths.

Wonder what the balance of new recruits will be in the summer. It was strange to bring in attacking players and, for most of the second half of the season, play long high balls that didn't play to their strengths. Wing wouldn't have fitted in to that style of play, as it didn't suit most of the players we still had.

Strange thing was we added good wide players and then ditched the strikers, but then played even more direct/long when the strikers had gone but the talent/ball players were out wide or drifting around off the front like Watmore. We really did make a mess of the final third of the season.

I sincerely hope Saville is gone by the end of the window. He couldn't keep up with Peter Kay doing his Dad's run.
Saville is an odd one. He's one of those ones you want to really smash into a tackle or two because he looks like he has it in him. Or really start to demand the ball, get forward more, join in at both ends. I think he has it within him but seems to coast/drift through games. Bit of a shame really.

such an honour! pretty much spot on to be fair. my only disagreement would be with saville.
Saville‘s contract is up on 30 June 2022. We paid £8M for him. IMHO, we can not afford to let him walk for nothing too, like we did with Gestede, Britt, Fletch et al. We need to sell this summer to get some money back and reinvest it in the squad, if anyone will cough up a fee that is (I doubt he’d sign another contract for todays salary offerings anyway, even if the club saw things differently).

Saville certainly is an odd one.
He absolutely doesn't look like he could really smash into a tackle, he looks a weed.
He doesn't coast through games at all, he simply can't keep up.
Totally crap and an appalling signing.
He will hit P&L with another £2m amortisation this season. If we could get that for him it would be madness not to sell.
You could buy a better player than him (we did in Morsy) for £2m and amortise that fee over the new players' contract length and they would also then have some resale value.
The £2m he will otherwise cost this season could fund three £2m signings on three year deals.

This nothing player will cost us a hell of a lot of money AGAIN this season.
And he is *****

I think you're quite harsh but I don't really disagree with too much of it if that makes sense. I think he could do more if he put his mind to it but I wouldn't be averse to us trying to cash in and looking for someone better. I like Morsy holding, Tav floating about and one other - maybe McNair at times, maybe someone a bit more combative who can do things at both end of the field. We do miss a presence in the middle of the field when Tav isn't there. It'd be great to have another one who could put a foot on it, maybe dribble a bit as well, and pick a forward pass.

britt is 1 for performance and a 0 for effort. An utter fuc|king disgrace. Hes going to get tortured if he ever returns to the riverside and quite rightly so.
What are you giving him 1 for - finding his way on the pitch occasionally?
His 'performances' last season deserve ZERO, and that's coming from someone who doesn't hate him like some on here

The bad

Bettinelli 4/10. Regressed throughout the season as well despite the number of ex gks on the coaching staff
Fisher 5/10. Pound shop Fleming.
Spence 4.5/10. There’s a footballer in there somewhere, stuck between styles?
Morsy 5/10. Some shockingly bad displays, not sure he was a signing we needed.
Coulson. As per Spence, hasn‘t progressed.

The good.

Tavernier 8/10. Best player at the club. Keep fit, little bit more consistency he’s a PL player.
Fry 8/10. Best defender at the club, grown in stature.
McNair 7.5/10. Stop bloody diving.
Watmore 8/10. Doesn‘t really fit style when hoofing it but when he has the ball and is running with it a massive threat.

The jury is out.

Bola 6/10. A mistake leading to a goal virtually every game in the last 6/8. Maybe due to position change
Dijksteel 6.5/10. injury prone so far.
Mendez-Laing 5.5/10. Barely had a sniff....

The ugly

Britt 1/10. Gave impression he couldn‘t give a toss
Fletcher 2/10. Injured then not bothered.
Akpom 3/10. Warnock star signing, doesn’t fit style.

The indifferent

Everyone else.

Think he’s extremely limited technically and lacks mobility. For a side supposedly looking to challenge for the play offs he’s not someone to start at home against any team, when needing a battler awa6 from home to hold onto a lead for the last 15 minutes he’s ok.

He was absolutely magnificent at Swansea, a game we completely dominated. We completely outclassed them and Morsy ran the midfield that day. He was everywhere, including being high enough up the field to score a late equaliser. I think he could do that more often but his primary job, and Warnock's instruction, is to cover the bases and do the dirty work. He has been really good for us this season, IMO. Look at our form since he was injured, the sort of goals we conceded. There were gaps everywhere. It isn't all down to Morsy being out injured but a big part of it was. Wycombe was a prime example, their midfielders were running off us and gliding into the box at will. Wycombe. Bottom of the league for almost the whole season and they humiliated our midfield. Put Morsy in there and he doesn't allow that to happen.

That's how I saw/see it anyway.

The money spent during Monk's.. whatever that was (winkie face emoji) has gone, Saville is here and a quilaity player imo (not £8m but we are where we are)

You really don't understand the finances do you?
We haven't paid for in our Accounts the fee for Saville. There is a liability on our Balance Sheet for the final 25% of Saville's fee. That £2m sum will therefore be charged to the P&L in the Accounts for the forthcoming season, just as it has the for the last three seasons already.
If we were incredibly lucky and got some idiot to agree to pay £2m for Saville, then this would balance the final year of amortisation of his fee. Saville would then have actually cost us £6m plus wages, all of which would have been paid for
Regrettably it is more likely we will sign ploddo on for two additional years, then spread that remaining £2m across 3 years, which would be perfectly legitimate.
The point is we can do better than spend that £2m plus wages on him this coming season.

Who do you sell Saville to for £2m and who do you buy in for £2m to replace him? Plus all the wages etc.. how much do you save by doing all this?

surely it depends on formation, in a 343 / 523 formation then there is plenty of room for a player like Morsy. His technical ability isn't too bad actually looks after the ball well, his tactical ability is exceptional
