Gazette article clarifies Payero situation

Ah well, either he's back in the summer for one last shot or we get most of our money back.
Probably prefer the latter imo as he struggled to get in our team, didn't set the world on fire in a poor league and he will be in last year of his contract so we either get £3m back or prob lose him on a free. Here's hoping they like him enough as a squad player.

" But Teesside Live have had it clarified that when Boro negotiated the loan deal with Boca Juniors in the summer it included an option for the Argentina giants to buy Payero on a permanent basis at the end of the 12-month agreement for a fee which is believed should recoup Boro most of the £3 million they paid for him in the summer of 2021."

That could be hiding a bigger loss as the club will not want to lose face.

If not Boca then some other club, maybe in the Spanish or Portuguese leagues, and Im sure we wont be holding out for the full 3m given we denied having paid as much as 2m when we signed him

How long is his contract? If it's three years we won't see him again as the club will need to sell. If it's 4 years he could feature next year.

I mean I don't know what goes on behind the scenes but from the videos that were put out by the club there didn't seem to be much support for him. It's little wonder he didn't settle.

It's a shame because since Brexit signing players from South America became much much easier. It's an area the club should be looking at.

It's a 3 year deal.

Would love him back honestly.

I’m a believer, thought he showed some serious ability in a couple of games. Not your average Championship midfielder but that’s why we were competing with Inter Milan to sign him and not Rotherham.

A midfielder who loves the ball, dictates play, can’t run but is tough, and sees the game better than anyone on the park… Basically describing Michael Carrick except Payero had a hell of a shot on him too.

Guess it’s up to him where he’d like to develop more and can understand why he’d want to stay at home with a massive club, but he’d be welcomed with a much more open mind than the last two managers.

Second season would have been a good one for him I think, maybe he fancies another go next year.

I think if he stayed he would have come good but now it's going to be a risk that he comes back, is ineffective and we lose him for nothing. With it being his choice to go and him not wanting to go to a European team I think it's a bit of a lost cause

maybe (I always hoped so for him) but in hindsight I don't feel like he showed much more promise than a lot of our recent past foreign flops, he didn't really stand out that much more than what we already had, although I'm always up for letting everyone get a fresh chance every preseason and under every new manager, as we know that someone who was terrible under one system can be a new player under another system.

I personally think he don't get signed by Boca on a perm for the asking price, I'm willing to bet that was just a sweetener to try and get the deal through
They either low ball us and sign him, or I personally think its more likely he takes on another loan until the end of the next season (and his contract) for another club in his country.
They have won competitions with him in the team, but having a light look over his stats and games played etc he does not look like someone they would buy for approx. 3m, but I think he genuinely is not ready and/or interested at the moment to play in europe/uk.

I think he was major home sick and in part with all the hype thought he would walk into our team, and when he was out injured I don't feel like he made that much effort to learn the language. Which if I was his manager it would of ***ed me off no end as he was over here on his own for the most of the time and could of used that time out to get someone or the club could give him someone to tutor him to learn the language. As a manager I would take that as not being fully invested, epically with him being more an up and coming player rather than someone who has been there and done it all. Wilder done a lot of things that worked against us with his attitude towards players, but I don't really hold anything against him with how Payero worked out. His card was marked for him the first time when he got subbed on and went off injured straight away and then when he was going to give him a chance in preseason he was injured again, and before them 2 injuries he had a few more injured spells before that.

If I had to bet what is going to happen with him (and I hope I'm wrong and he becomes the legend many people would like him to be lol) its that Boca don't buy him after the loan unless its for pittance, and he just joins another club over there on loan and then leaves on a free back to Argentina. People bought into the idea of him being the next big Argentina player, like a new Juninhio for us, but from what I've seen he's closer to working out like a de start/de pena, I want the lad to smash it for us like most do but don't think he is really into playing over here and rather be at home
