Gary Neville's suggestion to make football better

Initial reaction is absolutely not. Sounds rubbish and gives far too much importance to a penalty shootout which in my opinion should be replaced with something else anyway.

Terrible idea, what’s wrong with a draw. Why not go back to two points for a win, then there’s less jeopardy in losing a game….might also make the league more competitive?

I like Gary Neville, but not a fan of this suggestion one iota, it is anti-football. I can just imagine the increase in dark arts, time wasting, pretend injuries etc that would go on. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.

A firm no from me.

I don't understand the constant need to tinker with the game. What started as a simple 17 law game with a simple format is being bastardised into oblivion. As someone wisely observed - we aren't American entertainment sports. It's football. Leave it alone. The move to 3 points instead of 2 was a good thing generally but getting a draw away from home at a big club is part of the fabric of the game. A nonsense from Neville, who I usually like.

If you wanted to fix problems in the game then sort out the diving, the offside and handball complications, reinstate replays and put in place a proper set of PSR rules policed by an independent regulator. Don't **** about with whether a draw is ok as a result.

In fairness, he isn't on his soap box about this or anything, it was just a podcast question about 'what would you do to make football better' and this is one idea he suggested.
