Gaming PC's....

Young un wants one for XMAS. I have no idea.

How does this one stack up as a starters model......

No that great in truth - for a gaming PC you'll want a dedicated graphics card in there and that doesn't have one .. but as Jedi says above .. it depends on what sort of games he'll be playing .. if he wants to play the latest AAA games then you'll definitely be needing a dedicated graphics card whether that's something from NVIDIA or AMD

if you can drive to sunderland this place is probs best locally for gaming pcs and support https://www.falconcomputers.co.uk/ they will make sure you get what you need at best prices, where argos will just sell you a computer and it might not be what you need and the support will be either zero or passed onto the supplier, these will be able to help with anything you need, which is ideal if you dont have a clue

i'll add my 2 cents.

as said above you need a dedicated graphics, not integrated.
processor minimum i5 or R5. do not go for a i3 or R3. a 7 is probably more suited if you can stretch to that
RAM 16GB minimum. try to avoid 8. if you have to get one with 8 it is not the end of the world though as the RAM is probably the easiest thing to upgrade so you can max this out after you have the machine
hard drive SSD as a minimum. if you can try and get 1 with an SSD and a HDD for storage.

also try to get a 144hz monitor if you can

  :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Your money will go a lot further used, brand new gaming pcs that are capable generally aren't cheap but can often pick up a bargain on selling sites just need to get someone that knows what they're looking at to check it over first

what is wrong with a console? xbox series x or PS5?

as just said GFX cards are mega expensive. To get something that does newer things like Ray Tracing are 100s. xbox series x does that and no need to faff about.

But....... PC gaming is superior to consoles :)

More expensive but way better, I was playing Spider-Man remastered on maxed out settings, ray tracing, full density traffic and people at 100fps+ yesterday, console can't do that.

But yeah it really depends on what he wants to play and expects, consoles are better value for money but a PC's ceiling is a lot higher.

Consoles are cheap but to get that effect they bodge it a bit. Even a 3090ti struggles with some games at 4k 60fps so for a Console to do it shows they're making sacrifices somewhere. I have a ps5 and an Xbox series x and I mostly play my pc except a few exclusives.

On shooters they have to give the Console players aim assist otherwise they get destroyed by mouse and keyboard players which leads to poor players being a lot better than they are.

IF you can afford it. I have a series x and love being on the sofa with a controller, but PC gaming is always better. GTA5 with mouse/keyboard is way better than a controller... if you can afford it. My PC is worth several thousand (collected stuff over the years and swapped stuff etc).

Yes, we really need to know what games they play now and what types of games they might want to play in the future. Also, what is your budget?

The one you linked to isnt a gaming PC - I know it says it is, but honestly, it isnt. No dedicated graphics card like others have mentioned. Also - even if you bought that and a graphics card to put in that would be a mistake as well. In those cheap pre build machines usually the components are sub standard. For example the power supply will be a no brand and not powerful enough to also power a decent graphics card.

I don't think I'd ever buy one of those pre-built ones, they use horrible parts and aren't optimised at all, a lot of them don't even make sense but they'll slap a few of the components that people might know on to reel them in and charge double what the components cost. Airflow is important too, you'll see some of them that look really nice but they have no airflow at all.

I'd never not build my own but if I wasn't confident at that then I'd at least go somewhere I can pick the parts like box.co.uk. Never go to places like Currys, Argos or anywhere like that, you'll get rinsed.

Once we have an idea of what the kid likes to play then we could probably knock a build together on box.co.uk or somewhere similar that'd meet his needs depending on the budget.

I was in early on the 4k gaming pcs, used to upgrade the gpu every year all the way upto think a 1080-ti, then the xbox one x's come out and the 4k graphics were good enough for me to sell my gaming pc off before the parts dropped in value, have xbox series x now and even better but I used to just get more enjoyment out the pc seeing how it handled games more than playing them lol, but find once your playing alot of the extra things which impress you when you first see them tend to merge into the whole experience when your playing and dont matter as much as they do when your not playing and viewing whats on show.

series x looks great at 4k for me tho and more than good enough,
but always fun making computers and building them up and seeing that the eat up the game at full settings lol, costs alot tho haha so was glad to get a cheaper easier option in the long run
