Fry next?

No it’s not especially in defence.

And selling our key young defender means we’d have buy yet another player.
Our defence at the minute, hasn't been this good for a while. Decent keeper, Lenihan is a leader, Dijksteel and Bola either side are ok yes i would like another in there instead of Bola, but they're decent, the wing backs are the best in the division. We need a centre back, 2 if Fry goes or 1 if CW sees McNair as an option there, but we need to speculate to accumulate and thats what we're doing and with the best manager in the division leading the way, change is good.

Its never easy for fans to separate their emotions from the needs of the business and the wishes of the players.
Sometimes, sentiment has to be put to one side.
The club needs the money and Wilder has the contacts, skills and experience to work alongside players and turn them into Premier League stars.
Which of us had heard of McGree or knew much about Lenihan, Giles, Smith, Steffan or Marcus Forss before this season?
Fear not, we can move on, knowing our team and club are in a safe pair of hands.(y)

I wouldn't want to lose Fry or McNair but I don't think any of those team mentioned would want McNair. He's not a good enough defender to play CB in the PL so if anything he could get a sideways move to another Championship team. I think he'll see plenty of game time this season whether that is at RCB or LCB, if we don't bring in another LCB (or even DM). I presume he is ahead of Bola in the pecking order for the LCB position but I'd have him behind Dijksteel for RCB.

Fry is good but not great and I think the reason he has lost his place is because he isn't a leader like Wilder considers Lenihan to be. From what I've seen there doesn't seem to be much in it in terms of defensive ability but being able to command and organise is something that Wilder wants. I could see plenty of teams taking Fry. Not necessarily to start in the PL but he's a good defender and in a more traditional back 2 with a leader alongside him he could thrive.

I wouldn't want to sell anyone and not replace them though. I'd rather have good players than cash in the bank so it all depends on what the recruitment team have up their sleeves. Both players should be easily replaceable.

I can see Stoke as strong favourites, the Northern Ireland connection is there with their under fire Manager Michael O’Neill. They might see Paddy as a steadying influence. Who knows eh, just an opinion.
I agree they may fancy him, just don’t see us selling us to them

I can't see a position in the team where Fry would be first choice, especially if we bring players into the problem positions that have been discussed hundreds of times in the last few weeks. If he's OK with that, great, if not then maybe we cash in, but it then means yet another position that needs cover in a rapidly contracting transfer window.

As for McNair - well just read that last paragraph again and change the names.

It depends on his value to us, and how others value him.

If a prem club valued him at 10m id snap their hands off, and i'm sure the club would too but if they come with a figure that falls short, 4/5/6m i can't see us entertaining that.

I think Fry starts in our Starting XI (At LCB with Lenihan and Dijksteel) at the minute but i definitely feel he is one of the XI who we could find a replacement for, whilst banking a little cash or bringing in cash to spend elsewhere in the team.

How much is Fry or McNair worth in todays market?

According to transfermarket .com both are worth £6million - how much would we have to spend to get players of comparable skills?

The sales of Spence & Tav mean we have the money to achieve our buying ambitions. This means it would be a really big offer to tempt sale of Fry or McNair. If we add an LCB our defence for the season is sorted. Selling either of Fry or McNair means we have to buy a another defender

It’s come from rockcliffe that’s about as much as I can reveal. Something I’ve heard, thought it was worth sharing.

Could be codswallop but source has been reliable in the past
Oh sorry thought you meant on twitter or another forum or something. Fair enough, I will take it with a pinch of salt but thanks for sharing anyway. It wouldn’t surprise me if Fry is upset about potentially being a back up now

And I guess you wouldn't blame him for being annoyed. He has played 184 First Team matches for Boro and been talked up a lot.
Whether he should play ahead of Lenihan at CB, Dijksteel at RCB, or try and play LCB remains to be seen, but he will have to battle for a place, or agitate for a move.
I hope he stays and merits a place in the team again, but I wouldn't put my house in it.

I think he will be a back up myself. For the time being he could potentially play LCB but I would argue McNair is more suited to the position until we sign a specialist. Lenihan and Dijksteel are my first picks for the other spots.

I hope he stays too but like you I wouldn’t count on it
