Thousands of children and families across South Tees have the chance to take part in free fun activities during the Easter Holidays.

Parents and carers throughout the Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland areas with children on free school meals may be able to benefit from free holiday clubs places for children and young people through the Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF).

Backed by a nationwide investment of around £200 million and jointly run in South Tees by Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland councils via the young people’s Junction Foundation, the expanded HAF programme ran across all local authority areas during the Easter, Summer and Christmas school holidays in 2021.

HAF is back again in 2022 and will enable children and young people – aged from Reception class to final year of Secondary School - to enjoy fun activities with friends and develop new skills. The local programme is targeted at those who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals.

The holiday clubs may involve helping young people get involved with new and enriching activities from sport to music, dance, drama, art, cooking and gardening, as well as improving socialisation, helping young people to have fun with friends during their Easter holidays.

The Government’s continuing investment in the HAF programme follows strong provision from HAF providers across the country in 2021 and builds on the foundations laid by sporting organisations, charities and the voluntary sector during the successful programme in 2020.

HAF is backed by around £200m per year for the next three years, providing enriching activities to children and young people, particularly those who receive free school meals.

In a joint statement, Councillor Alison Barnes, Cabinet Member for Children at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor Councillor Mieka Smiles said: “This is a chance for children and young people to have fun but also learn something they will take with them into their future education, adulthood, and working lives. Whether that be a new activity, sport, art or craft or drama, making a friend for life, or learning about and cooking something new to eat. We urge everyone eligible to take part.”
