Huge morning hoof for any board members that might enjoy music.

We've got more music venues, and for me more bands than we had when I was a youngster, lots more.
Maybe we've just seen a shift out of Middlesbrough and towards Stockton.. big pubs changed out for micro pubs

The Cornerhouse - The Social Room
The Crown - The Globe
The Arena - The Keys
The Royal Exchange
The Cornerhouse - Mint Nightclub
Uncle Alberts - The Black Market
Millenium - New Tees Valley Arena
The Grand Astoria Venue
Moby Grape - Storytellers
The Westgarth - Playbrew? The Western?

sort of.. The Westgarth has defo not been replaced.. maybe with a few smaller venues stepping up like The Chapel and Tofts House..

It certainly feels like Stockton is leading the way at the moment with those mentioned above and not forgetting The Georgian Theatre, Green Room, NE Vol, Sticky’s and of course Arc.

The loss of Westgarth is sad (student accommodation perhaps?) and the closure of BASE CAMP is the biggest blow in recent years imo. Doctor Browns used to put on gigs too.

But yeah there are a new breed of Middlesbrough venues popping up such as The Chapel, Off the Ground (fantastic place) and Cafe Etch. Disgraceland puts on some decent gigs from time to time as well.

The scene has a great variety at the moment..

Stockton arnt half beating us!! Boro has some class really small venues.. forgot about Doctor Browns!

Feel like we've missed the boat on really putting Middlesbrough on the map and maybe we've been in a terminal decline in tow without really noticing it.

The Odeon and the Cleveland Scientific Institute would have been superb replacements for the Arena and The Cornerhouse.. check out Stockton being all cool and accommodating!

They could have done a lot more with the Mall/Zanzibar.. but things keep ticking away there quite nicely. Jimmy Beck seemingly a one man cultural quarter!!

I was part of the Teesside Metal scene between 2008-2013/14 and it used to be absolutely booming. Redcar/Middlesbrough/Stockton/Darlington whenever we'd be on a line up every single gig I went to absolutely packed. It was a fantastic time. It saddens me to see that I only know 2 bands in the genre from our area now who seem to be having to go elsewhere to play shows. I remember

I'm so unbelievably proud of a friend of mine Dylan Cartilage who's absolutely killing it now! He's come along way from the guy who got giddy at me dedicating my cover of crazy train to him and sitting in his front room hammered at 5am as he told me the story of Cane and Able 😂

I'd do anything to put together a reunion of those fantastic bands from that era but life gets in the way.

Heavy Lies The Crown/Hey! Alaska/Foundations/Wraiths/About A Plane Crash/All At Sea/Calais/Broken Idols/Across All Oceans/Everending.

This area was spoilt!

Morty, you should check out the Dylan Cartlidge interview I did in a previous edition…

Want me to see which edition it’s in?

Billingham Catholic Club still shining the light for rock music with a gig every Saturday. The Force were on recently and there's some great local bands turning up.

Good read

Forward thinking Stockton Council have been light years ahead of myopic Middlesbrough's when it comes to music and the arts.
I agree yep, for all its faults (and I'm Stockton born and bred!) Stockton has a number of good things going for it and the thriving music scene is one of them.

Of course, there are a number of cracking acts from Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Darlington, Redcar, etc. too. I'd personally prefer to think of it as a 'Teesside scene' with many small towns pulling together to create something special.

I have no criticisms of the musical talent, nor the promoters, quite the opposite.

Anyone else struggling to maintain interested due to the Ryanair pricing models in use? Looked at a gig earlier in Newcastle - £30 tickets + £5,50 booking fee + £2 for e-tickets.
25% markup is a pi55take imo.

Middlesbrough used to be top dog by an absolute country mile!

Middlesbrough Music Live
The Arena
The Cornerhouse
The Westgarth

Stockton had the Stockton Fringe which went pear shaped after Mercury Rev headlined.. and Ku Bar.. that was it.

Uncle Alberts.. deserved to be open for a lot longer. MINK bar too Base Camp.. what a waste!

I think a lot more needs to be done with what we have left..
