For 6 weeks he was probably the best player in the world, certainly the best I'd seen in a Boro shirt

He had a pretty troublesome ankle injury and regularly played with injections, I don’t think he ever recaptured the brilliance of his Porto and start at Boro days during the rest of his career. In the end he wanted to stay and have another crack at the Premier League but Robson chose to go down the Gascoigne route which in hindsight was a mistake.

As I remember it he demanded a move, allegedly because his wife wanted out of Middlesbrough. But I suspect because he didn’t want to play in the second tier. Ended up at Tenerife. A far cry from Barcelona.

Yep, he should have stayed at the Boro

Didnt Bobby Robson deny he wasnt after Emerson, back then if they wanted a player theyd go & get him

I think he had one or two domestic issues that came to a head in December 97, he’d heard that the club were after Gascoigne and he was going to be sold.

Mind you we did go in for him a couple of times when he was playing at Tenerife and he knocked us back.

A joy to watch, he had so much talent, he could run and dribble with the ball, tackle, score goals, everything you’d want from the perfect midfielder. I’m not sure what went on behind the scenes, we all heard stories I guess. My main memories of him were those early performances (Everton away in particular) and those block buster goals against the mackems 👍🏻If we’d stayed up an got those rumoured players we were after who knows what would have happened - maybe it did happen in an alternative universe and we won the league, FA Cup and champions league 🤔

I was on a riverside tour, that summer and our guide had been watching the team train , he said ' forget about junihno, the beast is the one to watch - he is something else".

I remember the pre season game against Inter. Ince was one of the best midfieldersin Europe at the time and Emerson muscled him out of the game completely

Great first goal by Emo, but look at the build up to Sunderland's second.

Emerson could be sublime and under lime.

He was very good for the first few weeks of 96/97.

However, I always think its quite telling that he is arguably best remembered for a brilliant performance in a pre-season friendly against Inter that meant nothing but happened to draw a big crowd. I think that tells it’s own story about the level of hype around at the time, around the club in general, having just signed Ravanelli as well.

The truth is that, like Rav, he acted like a complete knob and we should remember him with no more affection than Ziege, Ramirez or Braithwaite. In fact over the course of his one full season here, he wasn’t even as good as Ziege.

My favourite gazza game was southampton away November 7th 1998. Me and my mate went on the ra-ras. What a coach journey that was.
Gazza put us 1-0 up with festa getting a last gasp equaliser to make it 3-3. We had 9 men by then.
Glad I seen le tissier play and the Dell is up there with my favourite grounds. They certainly dont make them like that anymore.
They had a decent winger playing for them aswell

The fact that he left us and never went on to do anything of note anywhere else. Attitude problem. Waste of talent. Remeber hum at Egaleo. Looked good against us but surrounded by below. average players

I remember that game, they brought his cousin on. Then subbed him not long afterwards. But like others have said. Emerson was absolutely superb when on form

Maybe, at times, a knob on the pitch. My brother and I had a night in the players lounge with him once and he was great company tho

For a short cameo, 3 months in his last season for us, Viduka is the best player to ever wear a boro shirt. I know, I know he was playing for a move, but whatever the reason, for 3 months he was completely unplayable.

I have to agree with the first post.
For a couple of months, when we first got him, he looked a different class. against premier league teams.
Watching players just bounce off him, and some of his skills were incredible. I always mention his back heel of the ball onto his standing leg when he was pinned to the touchline - beautiful.
He could have been something exceptional but his head wasnt suited to his skills. Lots of player like that, I suppose.
