It was soft but not the same, Madueke (?) took the ball, the Mexico player didn't, he just put his leg across Kane

You go back to the point where possession changed substantially. Anything prior is irrelevant (to that incident). If they were already processing a penalty shout (in this case for Argentina) then that would take precedence. A penalty shout for Egypt would be ignored because they've gone on to score. Red cards could still be awarded for previous incidents too, if warranted - up until the last stop in play.

One of the big problems in all this (as mentioned on the match thread) is that commentators, pundits and journalists all give their opinions as fact.

As far as I've seen, no "official" statement has been made to say the reason for there being no VAR referral on the Salah incident was due to the threshold for a penalty being higher than a foul elsewhere. That came from the commentary/punditry of the match.

Dunno about 'official source' but the BBC's Dale Johnson 'football issues correspondent' said it here in the section titled 'Analysis: The key refereeing decisions'
