Football clubs flying to matches

I was quite shocked to learn that Aston Villa flew up to Teesside for the recent game, and flew back to Brum the following day. Surely, by the time all the usual check ins have been carried out, and by the time a coach has picked up and transferred the squad and officials from the airport to the Riverside, wouldn't it have been just as quick and/convenient to travel the whole journey by coach?

Football's not exactly "eco friendly" is it?

NE/NW to London fair enough but no Midlands clubs should be flying anywhere, not like they're sat on the X4 either, these buses are enormous, TVs, physio tables, kitchens etc yet they fly to save about what, an hour at most?
They get police escorts into/out of grounds too so not like traffic is a major issue.

Boro always fly to west country.
Bristol Cardiff Swansea
Been on same flight as team loads of times.
Boro coach waiting at Bristol to take them to hotel as well

That's fair enough for a 6 hour journey.
Villa is 3.5 hours. Your not even saving any time.

perhaps they had a loyalty card deal with their preferred airline. They collected 10 stamps already and this trip was therefore free... with conditions , like it's just a short hop.

When I saw the thread title I was thinking what you've just said - can't see how it would have been longer by coach with the getting to airport, check in, get on plane ,checking good to go, plane tracking ,flight , plane taxiing , checking ok to let passengers off, getting from airport to ground etc

Chartered plane, dropped a short walk to the plane, rapid take off, 30 minutes in the air, decant quickly and offski.
It will be much quicker and more controlled.
I'm not saying it makes it right, but probably saves them a couple of hours.

Wouldn’t imagine there’s much check in procedures for an internal chartered flight.

They won’t be arriving 3 hours before departure and sinking 6 pints in the lounge, anyway. Not like some people (ie me) 😅

Why did the Villa players fly up when the two coaches that picked them up from the airport had been driven up from Birmingham.

Because premier league clubs spend millions on medical teams etc. And a 40 min flight is probably better for players than a 3 hour coach.

It’s probably a minimal gain, but I don’t think being carbon neutral is high on the list of priorities for most teams

Yeah this, I can understand the flight (ish) it's not very green but from a comfort and speed perspective I can understand why clubs do it. But, just hire a coach from the area your flying to surely?!

It's a bit ridiculous to have coaches drive up anyway, I bet if you had detailed accounts there would be so much wastage at football clubs due to stuff like this. Was it Leeds back in the day spending 10s of thousands a year/month (memory is sketchy) on fish?

Arnaut Danjuma hops on a flight from Liverpool John Lennon airport to Manchester airport for training each day, getting a taxi to Everton training ground. Outrageous

As soon as I saw this it reminded me of Man Utd defending their decision to fly to Leicester rather than drive the 100 miles and the time Pep whinged because he couldn't get a flight for his players from Newcastle.
